The Denver Broncos are having all sorts of problems on offense, but the answer might be right in front of them.
The Denver Broncos are having all kinds of problems generating offense and scoring points, and no one knows what the answers are.
But sometimes solving problems like this is simpler than it looks. The Denver Broncos finally get an unexpected break in their brutal schedule, and the Los Angeles Chargers might be the answers to the Broncos’ problems, not to mention their prayers.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The Chargers were expected to be one of a series of challenges on Denver’s early schedule, but instead they’ve fallen apart, and LA is an unholy mess at 0-4.
The problems start with coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert has long been regarded as a prototype who was going to take the league by storm, but he can’t even take over his own team effectively at this point.
Factor in new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as part of the mess, and that’s made things exponentially worse. McDaniel’s motion offense was once the gold standard when he was head coach of the Miami Dolphins, but now he’s leading a unit that can’t get out of its own way.
The media is having a field day with all this, of course. Harbaugh is falling into the feud that various media members are currently creating, with his latest press conference adventure revolving around questions the coach thought were really about taking shots at Herbert.
They’re well-deserved. Herbert is a shell of the quarterback who came into the league as a gunslinger, with basic ball security being just one of his issues with the season about to pass the quarter pole.
This should be meat on the bone for the Denver defense, which finally gets a break after facing the powerful offenses of the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers.
It should also be a palliative for the Broncos offense, which also hasn’t been able to get out of its own way to date. The Chargers defense is giving up an average of 26.5 points so far, with the Broncos’ top output being 20 against the Jags.
But this is also a trap game of sorts. Sooner or later, every winless team pulls it together and gets an unexpected victory, and the last thing the Broncos need is to be “that team.” It’s a road game, so getting ahead early will be essential, as Herbert has generally turned into a puddle when that happens.
