Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix says the stories about his struggles lately are "made up."
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has hit a new low in his struggles to improve his poor play, and it feels ominous. According to a report from Charean Williams from Pro Football Talk, Nix sees playing good or bad as a “narrative,” adding that, “I think it’s honestly kind of something we make up.
It’s a remarkable statement that represents a serious denial of reality, but this is what a lot folks do today when things aren’t going their way for whatever reason. Make something up, and in Nix’s case it was his followup statement that he doesn’t think he’s playing any different than the way he’s normally been playing.
If you’ve watched the games, you know that’s nonsense. Nix has looked cautious and tentative, and he’s making a lot of poor throws. He’s also missing receivers coming open over the middle of the field, which has been a problem area for him dating all the way back into early last season.
Unfortunately for Nix, the numbers tell a story that makes it harder for him to deny what’s really happening. According to Williams, his numbers are down from 2025 in completion percentage (64.3 to 59.9), yards per attempt (6.4 to 5.8) and passer rating (87.8 to 80.8). The Broncos are also ranked 30th in total offense after being 10th last year, which is a huge drop-off.
These numbers are rooted in facts, and Nix is also trying to create his own narrative that says the Broncos are 3-2 and having what the quarterback called a “good start.” To him it resembles Denver’s 14-3 season, but the rest of us certainly aren’t seeing that.
The issue is causing all kinds of problems for both coach Sean Payton and new offensive coordinator Davis Webb. Webb couldn’t find the magic key to unlock Nix’s top-tier performances in his play-calling, so Payton took over, then got almost exactly the same results.
If there’s a bit of good news here, it’s that Nix acknolwedged that there are things the Broncos want to fix and clean up, and he added that Denver is leaving some things on the field. But the 3-2 record is largely about the poor performances of both Nix and everyone involved in the running game, and right now no one seems to know what the fix is.
Playing the Seattle Seahawks on a short week on Thursday won’t make things easier, and it will be interesting to see what the Broncos do to try and generate points this week.
