Last NFL coaching cycle saw big names such as Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel and Liam Coen land jobs. All three are heading to the NFL playoffs, and all three hires look to be home runs early on.
This time around, there might not be a candidate like any of those guys, although Los Angeles Chargers DC Jesse Minter has been a popular name to watch.
Well, the Denver Broncos have one assistant on their staff who could be receiving a ton of phone calls once Black Monday comes to an end after the NFL regular season.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz named Davis Webb as a name to watch.
"Davis Webb, in Denver with a Sean Payton endorsement, at just 30 years old, is a name that has a ton of juice going into this head coaching cycle," Schultz said. "He has had a massive impact on Bo Nix's development."
Webb played college football at Cal and was selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He played in a total of two games with the Giants and Buffalo Bills before leaving the league.
In 2023, he joined the Broncos as a QBs coach and has been in Denver since, and he works very closely with Payton as well.
Yes, Webb is just 30 years old, but we have seen teams get creative and take a chance on outside-the-box hires, which is something Schultz wrote on his X post.
Earlier in the season, Albert Breer also pumped up the Webb buzz.
"I've got an interesting name for you that's a little off the radar right now," Breer said. "And that's the quarterback's coach in Denver, Davis Webb, who is extremely well thought of. Who's a great quarterbacks guy. ... I think he's something that could come in and galvanize a place pretty quickly."
In today's NFL, it doesn't sound that crazy to hire somebody who is 30 years old, especially after the retreads have failed again and again.
But, Webb works closely with Payton, seems to have a lot of respect, and the Broncos' potential playoff run could throw a dart into team's hopes of bringing in Webb for an interview and potentially a job depending on how far Denver goes.
But, with Black Monday approaching and more jobs likely to open up, Davis Webb is a name that could circulate more and more over the next month.
