Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton provided an update on Bo Nix's rehab, but this time he left out the medical details.
The Denver Broncos offered an update on the rehab of quarterback Bo Nix as part of their post-draft comments, but this version offers a conspicuous lack of medical details, according to a report written by Parker Gabriel and Luca Evans of the Denver Post.
Nix visited with the surgeon who repaired his broken ankle back in January, and Dr. Norman Waldrop III confirmed that everything’s on track when Nix checked in last week.
“He had a re-check that was scheduled,” said coach Sean Payton. “He’s doing great. We’re excited about his progress. Nothing to report. These guys will be coming in here — he’s here. A number of these guys are coming in the building.
“Guys will be working out Monday and then more of a team meeting next week.”
At first glance this story sounds like a nothing burger, but it’s not quite that. Payton provided plenty of medical commentary when he first reported on Nix’s situation back in January, saying that the quarterback had a “propensity” for this kind of injury.
The Broncos have since backtracked on that part of Nix’s recovery, and for good reason. They haven’t said anything specific since, and Denver is now sticking to the expected party line, which has Nix being “involved” when Denver’s offseason program begins on May 4.
Involved could mean anything, of course, but it does pour more water on the controversy fire that occurred when Payton first made his comments. Broncos owner Greg Penner was forced to step into the fray to make sure the running back and forth between Payton and Nix didn’t get further out of hand, and this update was basically just a continuation of that.
The model for this sort of thing is easily available within the AFC West. The Kansas City Chiefs also have a quarterback who’s rehabilitating after a serious injury, but their updates on Patrick Mahomes’ injury status come with a very different flavor.
Both Mahomes and coach Andy Reid weigh in on the quarterback’s situation regularly, but no meaningful information is provided. Mahomes posts video clips of his latest workout videos that supposedly show him on track to play in Week 1, and Reid chimes in with a comment about how the Chiefs are monitoring his situation.
As for Nix, we won’t know anything until training camp, and even then it may be tough to get a read on where he is in his rehab process. One clue would be if the Broncos bring in a camp arm to pick up some throws, but Nix’s initial appearances in camp will probably be both limited and carefully orchestrated.
