The Denver Broncos have been winning in spite of their offense, but things appeared to get at least a little better for quarterback Bo Nix in Sunday's 30-16 defeat of the Arizona Cardinals.
When you're an NFL quarterback and find yourself listed among the likes of Chris Wienke, Joey Harrington, Jake Plummer and Brock Osweiler, you're probably not in the midst of a great season.
But that's where Denver Broncos' quarterback Bo Nix found himself after six weeks of the 2026 NFL campaign.
Namely, Nix was on pace for 2,972 passing yards and 17 touchdowns on 536 attempts. If he were to finish the season with those less-than-mediocre numbers, he would join the four aforementioned signal-callers as ones who put together full seasons in which they threw at least 500 passes but finished with less than 3,000 yards passing and 20 touchdown passes.
The 2026 season wasn't supposed to be like this for Nix. It was supposed to be one in which he built on a 2025 campaign where he led the Broncos to a 14-3 record and appearance in the AFC Championship Game while completing 63.4% of his league-high 612 passes for 3,931 yards and 25 scores.
On top of that, Denver added top-notch receiver Jaylen Waddle to the offense via an offseason trade, which would give Nix a downfield weapon the team had previously lacked.
But Nix had missed that AFC title game with a broken right ankle that would require surgery, leading to whispers that he was still favoring his right leg as the 2026 season began to unfold.
Well, in Sunday's 30-13 Denver defeat of the Arizona Cardinals, Nix showed everyone that his ankle might just be fine - in the most visceral way possible.
With the game tied 6-6 and the Broncos facing second-and-seven from their own 38 with four minutes remaining in the first half, Nix escaped a disintegrating pocket and sprinted - he reached a top speed of 19.9 mph - 62 yards for a touchdown, to give the Broncos a lead they would not relinquish.
The run was the longest run by a QB in Denver history, the longest scoring run of any player this season and the longest by a QB since Lamar Jackson had a 79-yard scoring scamper and Justin Fields a 67-yard TD jaunt, both in 2022.
Nix wasn't done fashioning a small bit of history, however. When he threw a 52-yard scoring pass to R.J. Harvey to make it 20-6 early in the third quarter, he became the fourth QB since the AFL-NFL merger to have a rushing touchdown of more than 50 yards and a passing touchdown of more than 50 yards in a game, joining Jackson, Fields and Cam Newton.
Of course, the most important measure of any Nix performance will be his passing numbers and, admittedly, they remained rather pedestrian against the Cardinals: 15-for-29 for 222 yards - his most since compiling 288 in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars - and the TD pass to Harvey, which was actually a short swing pass that the running back carried the distance.
For the season, Nix is now 129-for-218 (59.2%) for 1,271 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. His 74 yards rushing on Sunday gives him 111 on the season in 29 carries, a 3.8-yard average.
Nix and the 5-2 Broncos will need those numbers to keep trending upward this Sunday when they welcome the 5-1 Kansas City Chiefs to Denver for an AFC West showdown that will determine who has control of the division with the season's midway point approaching.
