As offensive struggles mount in Denver, Sean Payton could reclaim play-calling duties, potentially ending Davis Webb’s brief tenure if the unit fails to ignite against the winless Chargers.
The Denver Broncos entered the 2026 season with Super Bowl hopes. And, having Davis Webb as the offensive coordinator and play-caller was expected to be a big boost.
Webb drew plenty of OC and head coach buzz, and even had several interviews, before Denver ultimately decided to promote him from QB's coach to OC following the firing of Joe Lombardi.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton turning over play-calling duties was a big surprise at the time, and after four weeks, it might be a matter of time before Payton takes things over.
The Broncos are 2-2, and they just lost to the San Francisco 49ers in another sluggish offensive performance, with the final score being 24-14 in Santa Clara.
Entering Week 5, ESPN's Benjamin Solak even predicted that the Week 5 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers could be Webb's final game as the team's play-caller, at least for now.
"Another offensive stinker, and I could see coach Sean Payton switching up the headset on a short week before facing the Seahawks on Thursday night in Week 6. Seems like a smart way to get the drop on an elite unit," Solak wrote.
Right now, it isn't much of an argument, either.
Here are the Broncos offensive rankings coming into Week 5:
- Points scored per game: 27th (16.5 PPG)
- Yards: 21st (286 yards per game)
- Rushing yards: 29th (81.3 yards per game)
- Time of possession 28th (1:53:59)
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has thrown for 819 yards with 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. J.K. Dobbins has led the rushing attack with 161 yards on 46 carries, and the next highest is RJ Harvey, who has just 49 yards.
Jaylen Waddle, the Broncos' prized offseason trade acquisition, has just 185 yards and 1 touchdown on 16 catches. Harvey leads the team with 20 receptions, but he has just 132 yards.
The only other pass-catcher to have 100 or more yards in total this season is Pat Bryant, who landed on the IR with an injury.
Courtland Sutton has just 9 catches for 86 yards, and nobody knows when - or if - this offense turns things around.
The good news is that the Broncos face the winless Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5, and Jim Harbaugh's team, with Mike McDaniel as the OC, has plenty of problems of their own.
However, if the Broncos flop in Week 5, Payton might have no choice but to take over control of the offense again, and it could severely impact Webb's chances of landing an OC or head coaching job this offseason.
