Former Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller lobbied to come back to Denver, but now he's with the Dallas Cowboys.
Former Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller spent much of his offseason lobbying for a return to Denver, but the Broncos elected to pass on bringing him back and now he’s signed with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a report from Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk with the move reported by multiple other outlets.
It’s an amusing story, especially since the Broncos expressed no interest in Miller, even after linebacker Jonathon Cooper was arrested twice back in June after a domestic violence incident. Miller even lobbied for a front office job, but now the Texas native is all in on the Cowboys experience.
“They were the first team to contact me, like a week before training camp,” Miller said. “It just seemed right to me. I live here in the offseason, my mom and dad are here, my kids are here. I’ve always had blue in my heart since I was a little boy, I always paid attention to the Dallas Cowboys.
“My earliest memory of football includes the Dallas Cowboys. I heard my daddy screaming in the back and I ran back there to see what was going on, and he was screaming because the Dallas Cowboys had scored a touchdown. That’s my earliest memory of football, and to be back home, it’s a dream within a dream.”
Miller had nine sacks last season, but his outsized ego may have played a role in the league-wide reluctance to sign him.
“I can still walk in at 8-10 sacks now. That’s just walking in,” said Miller, who failed to mention his interest in eventually taking over for GM George Paton in Denver. “I’m going to have opportunities to do it.”
The linebacker isn’t shy about talking up his potential locker room contributions in Dallas, either, although the way he expressed it didn’t exactly hit the humble button.
“I am the best teammate in the history of the National Football League. When it comes to being a great teammate, I just know how to do it,” Miller said. “Every team that I’ve been on, there’s not a guy in that locker room who would say anything bad about me.”
Miller certainly will fit in with the Cowboys, who are best known for big expectations and a mostly .500 record these days. At some point Miller will undoubtedly talk about his aspirations for a Denver return, but for now he’s focused on joining his fifth NFL team, as he also played for the Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills.
“It really has not hit me yet,” Miller said. “I’m excited to be here, I’m excited to get started.”
