J.K. Dobbins wasn't the biggest name signed in free agency this off-season, but he has proven to be a home-run signing for Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos.
Through Week 8, Dobbins 634 yards and four touchdowns in helping the Broncos lead the AFC West with a 6-2 record. The yards are good for third in the league, trailing only Jonathan Taylor and James Cook.
He has dealt with injuries at times throughout his season, but he has proven to be a very good running back when healthy.
He signed with the Broncos for only one year in the off-season, so he will be a free agent this off-season. However, Dobbins is hoping that this isn't a one year thing, as he is looking to remain in Denver for the rest of his career.
"I hope to end my career here and be here for the rest of my time in the NFL," Dobbins told reporters. "Far as extension and all that, though, I don't think about that. ... But, yeah, that would be nice, because I want to be in Denver. I love it. I love the fan base. I think the fan base and I have a connection. I love my teammates, and I also love -- I love Sean Payton. I love the owners ... but I don't think about the extension part."
The Broncos entered this season as a trendy pick to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, as well as a dark-horse in the Super Bowl race in large part because of their defense.
However, with Dobbins and RJ Harvey doing a great job running the ball and Bo Nix getting better each week, the Broncos are looking more like a complete team each week.
Up next for Denver is a game against the Houston Texans in Week 9. The Texans also have one of the best defenses in the entire NFL, especially when it comes to getting after the quarterback.
Having Dobbins deliver and get big plays could help slow down that pass rush a bit, giving Nix a little more time to look down field.
It is only halfway through the season, but so far, the Dobbins and Broncos relationship has been as good as either could hope for. The talks of an extension can wait until the off-season, but both parties are hoping things continue the same way they have to start the year.
