Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had a bad game, but he seemed strangely detached about it in his comments.
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix offered his reactions to the his team’s ugly loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, and the good news is that Nix isn’t panicking. He watched the film, and according to Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post, the 31-10 loss wasn’t as bad as he thought it would look.
Nix said there’s no reason to “freak out,” but the quarterback also sounded a little delusional about what seemed obvious to the rest of us who watched the game and came away aghast at how bad Denver was.
“You watch the film and there’s a couple good things and then all of a sudden we’re back because of a penalty or something and you just can’t win in this league like that,” Nix said.
Fair enough, but after that his reaction started to get a little sketchy. There’s a difference between a bad loss and a non-competitive loss, and the Bronos submitted the latter against the Chiefs.
“Overall, we’re not going to press the panic button and we’re not freaking out,” Nix added We’re not starting from scratch or anything. We feel like we’re still in a good spot.We just didn’t play great by any means and we’ve got to play better.”
That’s as generic as it gets, so let’s do a slightly deepr dive into the details. Nix said he thought the Broncos had what he called a “clean operation” with new offensive coordinator Davis Webb calling plays, but that should have been assumed.
He also thought the group was good getting in and out of the huddle, but that’s high school stuff, really. Nix added that players knew what they were supposed to do and the communication was good.
So why was the play itself so bad? That’s where the wheels came off the wagon a little bit in Nix’s comments, especially given that most of his teamates were extremely self-critical in their comments after the game.
“I would say it’s just a technique or a couple things here or there that we didn’t follow through with on the play,” Nix said.
Now we’ve entered the land of pure understatement bordering on fiction. The Broncos didn’t do much of anything right in Kansas City, and that’s not just about technique or following through. Bad football is just bad football, but Nix didn’t really own it.
The worst part was the fumbles. Three of them, specifically, although Nix lost only one. We haven’t seen that kind of carelessness from Nix, not even in his rookie year, when he looked lost at times and it was clear that the Broncos were going to be a one-and-done playff team once they made it.
“It is an anomaly and we treat it like one and we don’t make that a habit by any means,” Nix said of the fumbles.
Maybe this is all nothing and the Broncos will bounce back with a convincing win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but this isn’t the kind of reaction we were expecting from Nix at all.
