Riley Moss has as tough of job as any cornerback in the NFL. When Patrick Surtain II is healthy, he is looked at as the best cornerback in the NFL. He is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and when he is on the field, opponents don't throw his way.
What that means is Moss gets targeted early and often, as he has been targeted more than any other cornerback. However, opponents have learned that doesn't end well. Despite being targeted more than any defensive player in the league with 63, he has allowed the lowest completion percentage.
Surtain is currently on the injured reserve after suffering a pectoral injury during the win against the Dallas Cowboys.
With him out though, the Broncos defense hasn't missed a beat.
One thing that makes it easier for the Broncos defensive back is the fact that the team has the best pass rush in the entire league. They lead the league with 40 sacks, which is 12 more than the Detroit Lions who are second.
The pressure forces quarterbacks to have to get the ball out fast, and the corners don't have to guard for long extended periods of times.
The Broncos selected Moss with the No. 83 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Iowa.
Moss is dealing with an ankle injury, as he was listed as a 'limited participant' during the Broncos walkthrough. If this was a normal week, it wouldn't be as big of issue. However, the Broncos play Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
With the quick turnaround, it wouldn't be a complete shock to see Moss possibly sit this game out. The team has an extra three days off after this game, and then the Broncos have a monster home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
They are currently two games ahead of the Chiefs in the AFC West standings, and a win in that game could deliver a devastating blow to Kansas City's hopes of a 10th straight division title.
With Surtain already out for that game, they can ill-afford to be without their top two cornerbacks.
Moss will never get the credit and recognition that Surtain and some of the other defensive players do in Denver. However, for anyone in that locker room, they understand how truly important he is for that unit.
Kickoff between the Broncos and Raiders is scheduled for Thursday at 8:20 p.m. ET, and the game will be on Amazon Prime.
