The Denver Broncos need to add to their offense, and a trade for this Eagles tight end could help.
The Denver Broncos offense is struggling, and the unit clearly needs a boost. Quarterback Bo Nix can’t get out of his own way, receivers Jaylen Waddle and Courtland Sutton are frustrated, and tight end Evan Engram continues to struggle to emerge as a viable target for Nix.
It’s time for a change, and there’s an interesting possibility at hand. The Athletic recently listed Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert at No. 32 on their Big Board leading up to the trade deadline, and receiver/return man Marvin Mims Jr. has been left bereft among those Broncos who were seeking an extension.
There’s a match here, and it makes sense, especially with Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts now out for the season due to the blood clots that will force him to miss the rest of the season. The Eagles season is now on life support, and they’re currently looking for a quarterback to replace Hurts.
Philly might be building for next year and beyond, assuming Hurts can recover fully after taking blood thinners and being monitored by doctors. Meanwhile, things have soured in Denver for Mims, the 24-year old receiver who’s seen most of his snaps taken by Waddle after the Broncos’ big trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire Waddle.
Mims is undersized, but he’s a playmaker. He made several key plays down the stretch for Denver last year, and he’s one of the most dangerous return men in the game. The Eagles need receivers both now and for the future, as they haven’t been able to replace the production of A.J. Brown, who was traded to the New England Patriots during the offseason.
Goedert makes sense for Denver as well. Sean Payton has talked often about finding a tight end who can play the “joker” role in his offense, and Goedert would make a reliable option for Nix when plays start to break down, which has been happening frequently in Denver, especially in the last couple of weeks.
The contract part of this works as well. Mims wants an extension, and he’d have a chance to earn one in Philadelphia, albeit not in an ideal quarterback situation. Goedert is signed through the end of the season, and while he does come with an onerous cap hit down the road, it would be easy for the Broncos to deal with that with an extension if they like what they see.
One thing we know for sure in all this is that Denver will be looking for offense at the deadline, and this is one trade scenario that deserves consideration.
