The Denver Broncos are tied with the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots for the best record in the National Football League through 9 weeks (7-2).

Their most recent win over the Houston Texans was by no means pretty, but the team was able to get the job done and held the Texans without a touchdown while missing top cornerback Pat Surtain II.

Even without Surtain, the defense is still a strong unit with great backups, like former first-rounder Jahdae Barron and Kris Abrams-Draine.

The offense may not seem like they need more weapons, as the running back tandem of J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey is dynamic and the receiving room features different strengths, but the Broncos could use a tight end upgrade at the trade deadline.

Evan Engram was a free agent acquisition that seemed like a great fit for Head Coach Sean Payton, who called Engram his “Joker.”

Unfortunately for both parties, Engram hasn’t amounted to much. Nate Adkins had a promising start to the season but is dealing with a strained PCL in his knee and veteran Adam Trautman is having a good year, but Denver may want to add another established tight end to the room.

The Broncos signed veteran 41-year-old tight end Marcedes Lewis last week, but he is best known as a blocker at this stage in his career.

I believe the Broncos should make a push for Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet.

Kmet, 26, is one of the best all-around tight ends in the National Football League and is known for his elite hands. Kmet has caught 10 of 21 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown in seven games this season. In 91 career games, Kmet has 268 receptions for 2,734 yards and 20 touchdowns.

The reason Kmet could be available is because the Bears drafted tight end Colston Loveland in the first-round this year, and Loveland is starting to make a real impact recently.

Kmet hasn’t had his typical role the last couple of seasons and has been dealing with injuries. In their Week 9 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals, Kmet went down clutching his head and didn’t return to the game.

Loveland scored two touchdowns, including the thrilling game-winner.

Kmet is ultra-talented, but the Bears may want to move his contract to open more playing time and targets for Loveland.

Kmet signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension in 2023.
