Taylen Green's game status revealed ahead of Cleveland Browns Week 1 showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars

In an act of gamesmanship, Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken kept the door open ahead of Week 1 that he could activate rookie quarterback Taylen Green as a third QB against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The idea was that Cleveland could tap into Green's freakish athletic ability by having a special package in place for the sixth-round pick.

The dream of using Green as anything but a QB will have to wait. As the Browns released their official Week 1 inactives, Green was designated as the team's emergency third quarterback, meaning he can only enter the game if both Deshaun Watson and Sheduer Sanders leave the game due to injury.

Green was one of the most notable members of the teams, following the week of speculation that he could be active against the Jags.

Along with Green, the Browns' full inactive list was made up of:

Of that list, only Teven Jenkins was ruled out on Friday due to a back injury that he suffered during practice this week. Monken had previously said he expected Jenkins to be the starting right guard to open the season, but during Wednesday's practice, he got tangled with a teammate during individual position group work, took a spill and landed uncomfortably on his back.

While he initially jumped back into the o-line drills he was seen walking inside with a trainer shortly after the incident and wound up being limited for the day. He went on to have a did not practice designation for Thursday and Friday's practices, paving the way for him to miss Week 1.

In his place, rookie third-round pick Austin Barber will make the start at right guard. Barber is a tackle by trade, but tried his hand at guard a few weeks back during the preseason and had some strong moments.

Monken even noted that Barber had played himself into an ongoing competition with Jenkins for the starting job that seemed to be very close even leading into Week 1.

Other than Jenkins, the Browns begin the season mostly healthy. Cleveland and Jacksonville will kick things off at 1 p.m. from Everbank Stadium.
