3 Stats that will Decide if the Browns Beat the Titans in Week 7

Early scoring, red zone execution, and pocket protection will determine if the Cleveland Browns avoid a repeat upset in Nashville to keep their improbable playoff momentum surging toward 5-2.

For the first time this season, the Cleveland Browns will enter a game as a favorite as they head to Nashville to face the 1-5 Tennessee Titans.

And it may appear that they're the better team in this matchup, they also have their fair share of flaws and can't take any team lightly. Last year is proof of that, as a one-win Titans team came to Cleveland and wound up racking up 184 yards rushing to carry them to a 31-29 win.

This year, there's much more at stake for a 4-2 Browns team that is stunning in the playoff conversation, and a win over an AFC foe will help that cause. There are a number of key stats that could decide whether or not 5-2 is in Cleveland's plans though.

1) Who Scores First

Slow starts have become a weekly trend for the Browns offense through the first six games. Cleveland has scored just six points in the first quarter this season. The Titans haven't fared much better early on in games.

Expanded out over the first half of games, Cleveland is averaging just 1.23 points per drive, which ranks 29th, while the Titans figure sits around .77, which is dead last in the NFL. The team that scores first in this game could really put themselves at a major advantage given how difficult offense tends to be for both.

2) Red Zone Efficiency

Another place where these two offenses struggle mightily is in the red zone. Entering Week 7, Cleveland ranks 30th in red zone efficiency, scoring touchdowns on just 46.2% of their trips inside the 20. Tennessee ranks one spot higher, scoring TDs just 46.7% of the time it reaches the red area.

Touchdowns have been hard to come by for both of these teams in general, so the team maximizes its trips to the red zone by punctuating them with touchdowns will be at a major advantage in this game.

3) Sack Attack

It's no secret that Mike Rutenberg is a Robert Saleh disciple and both defensive gurus run similar attacking front systems. For the Browns, that philosophy has helped their defense surge to top five in the NFL in pressure rate (41.4%), while also racking up 19 sacks, which is the second most in the NFL.

And while Saleh's Titans aren't generating anywhere near the same amount of pressure as Cleveland, they are still having success corralling and sacking opposing quarterbacks, with 16 on the season. They boast one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, anchored by star DT Jeffery Simmons, and will create some problems for the Browns o-line.

The team that protects the quarterback better is bound to have more sustained drives in general, and thus, limiting the number of sacks will be very important for both teams.
