As veterans report to training camp, Denzel Ward was greeted with a new contract, answering any questions about his future with the Cleveland Browns
For the last two months, many around the NFL speculated that five-time Pro Bowler Denzel Ward could be on the trade block.
The Cleveland Browns were quick to put that narrative to bed, on the first day veterans arrived in Berea for the start of training camp.
Ward isn't going anywhere, inking a new 2-year extension worth $62.2 million with the only franchise he's ever played for. It's a deal that makes him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history for the second time in his career.
Before the extension, Ward, had two years remaining on his previous contract, signed in 2022, but no guaranteed salary.
Because of the nature of his contract and his status as a veteran on the team, Ward's future felt in limbo in the aftermath of Cleveland's blockbuster trade in June that sent star pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for three future picks and on the rise edge rusher Jared Verse.
The move felt like the ultimate testament that every player, no matter how good, has a price. With Ward assuming the title of the longest-tenured member of the team following Garrett's departure, many wondered if he could be next.
Only fueling the speculation is the fact that the Browns are in the middle of a rebuild, and Ward is approaching the always daunting age of 30.
Instead, the Cleveland native arrived in camp with full clarity on his future with the franchise.
In his eight years in the NFL, Ward has become one of the best corners in football. He's compiled 18 interceptions during that span, to go along with 104 PBUs.
Last season, Ward started 15 games for the Browns and snared one interception. He also broke up nine passes as well.
During a Week 17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers opted for throwing Ward's direction on three consecutive plays in the end zone, looking for a game-winning score, to no avail. Ward's tight coverage on all three plays secured a 13-6 win for the Browns.
There's plenty more where that came from for Ward, who now looks to be part of the team's plans for the foreseeable future. Of course, the full details of the deal will reveal how prohibitive it may be to get out of early, but any questions about Ward's standing with the team for the 2026 season have been answered.
Ward will anchor a cornerback group that is short on depth behind himself and his running mate, Tyson Campbell. Ward will also serve as a valuable voice in a locker room filled with young players looking to build a new culture for the franchise.
