Andre Szmyt accounted for 11 of the Cleveland Browns 23 points in their Week 2 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Andre Szmyt's tenure in Cleveland got off to a rocky start when he missed multiple kicks in Week 1 of last season and cost the Browns a win against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Over a year later, he's comfortably situated as the Browns kicker and has the hardware to prove it.
The Syracuse product was named the AFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 2 of the regular season after his perfect day kicking in Cleveland's 23-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Szmyt accounted for 11 points in the win, converting all three of his field goal attempts, including a 50-yarder and nailing each of his two PAT attempts as well.
Those kicks extended his streak of 18-straight successful field goal attempts, which dates back to Week 10 of last season. This is the second career weekly league award for Szmyt, who took home the same honor in Week 3 of the 2025 campaign.
In total, Szmyt was 24-of-27 on field goal attempts last year, and 25-of-26 on extra points. After the shaky start left many wondering if he would be the latest kicker to flame out in Cleveland, he settled in nicely the rest of the way to cement himself as the team's answer at the position.
He capped off last season with a Hollywood-like redemption story by nailing a 49-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Bengals (who he had missed against in Week) in Week 18. He's clearly picked up where he left off, starting the season perfect on his field goal (4-for-4) and PAT (3-for-3) attempts through the first two games of the new season.
Everyone knows the Browns have searched years for their franchise quarterback, but for a while, kicker remained another glaring spot on the roster that they just couldn't ever settle.
After the glory days of Phil Dawson kicking in Cleveland ended in 2012, the Browns have gone through a carousel of 14 different kickers who didn't pan out, before finally landing on Szmyt this past season.
Szmyt isn't the only player up for an award this week. Rookie WR Denzel Boston is in the mix for the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week, which is voted on by fans. That nomination: Boston hauled in five catches for 95 yards and a big 55-yard TD against the Bucs in Week 2. Cleveland is getting plenty of recognition this week after their upset win to get to 1-1 on the season.
