After arriving via a blockbuster trade, Jared Verse is already helping transform the Cleveland Browns' culture. Defensive Coordinator Mike Rutenberg has seen it firsthand.
Replacing Myles Garrett is no easy feat. One that Jared Verse isn't even attempting to pull off.
As Verse arrived in Cleveland as the key piece of the trade that sent Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams back in June, he's made it very clear that he's on his own journey separate from the single-season sack king.
That started with his presence in Berea for the final week of OTAs and the Browns mandatory minicamp just weeks after the trade went down. In just two short weeks, Verse seemed to leave quite the first impression on his teammates and coaches.
Verse's attitude and work ethic caught the attention of defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg. Cleveland's new DC made an appearance on Ari Meirov's podcast NFL Spotlight and noted that what stood out the most about Verse is how quickly he embraced a vocal role with his new teammates.
"We're on the field and I just hear 'nah that ain't the standard, that ain't the standard,' I turned back and it's Jared Verse," said Rutenberg. "And you could feel his energy, his passion. All you gotta do is turn on any Rams game and see how good the guy is, that's easy to see. But to feel his energy and to already witness his leadership is gonna be awesome for our defense."
Rutenberg's anecdote is a testament to who Verse is as a person and a player. The fact that he was willing to arrive in town and immediately start holding his teammates accountable proves just how motivated he is to be great.
It also takes a certain level of maturity to be able to come in and do that just days after being traded. At 25, there is a lot of excitement about what Verse can become as the Browns new premier pass rusher.
In his first two seasons, he's compiled 12 sacks, while being named Defensive Rookie of the Year and making two Pro Bowls appearances. He joins a defense that was one of the best in football in lieu of an anemic offense that held Cleveland back from winning more games.
He's one of numerous young players on the Browns roster, who fans should be excited about ahead of a 2026 season that is expected to set the tone for a new era of football in Cleveland.
