Todd Monken looks to gain a unique perspective on second-year QB Shedeur Sanders by consulting with his father and NFL Hall of Famers Deion Sanders. A meeting is to be determined.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken plans on connecting with NFL Hall of Famer and current University of Colorado head coach Deion Sanders at some point in the near future.
His intentions were revealed following Day 8 of the team's OTAs, and several weeks after Sanders announced his own plan to meet with Cleveland's new head man.
Monken is genuinely excited about it.
"I can't wait," Monken said of the anticipated breaking of bread. "First of all, got a lot of respect for Coach Sanders, obviously as a player, but also what he's done as a coach. And obviously he's done a great job with Shedeur as a father. I'm open anytime he wants to meet."
Throughout the spring, Monken has been overseeing a hotly contested QB competition with Shedeur and veteran Deshaun Watson as the two top candidates to win the job.
Deion, of course, is his father first, but also coached Shedeur through high school and college, giving him truly unique perspective into Shedeur that could be valuable to Monken.
During an appearance on The Barber Shop with Garrett Bush back in May, Deion first shared his desire to meet Monken, admitting he had a visit to Cleveland planned before canceling due to a commercial shoot.
Monken has a solution to make sure that doesn't stop them from connecting next time.
"He said he was going to come, but he had a commercial. So if he just lets me know where the next commercial shoot is, I'll be there. I'll show up," said the Browns new head coach. "I really am looking forward to it."
Interestingly, in that same interview, Deion made it known that he wasn't afforded an opportunity to meet with former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski after his son was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft last year.
"I want to meet him because I think it's vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur] how to get him going," he said. "That wasn't asked of me a year ago. I don't understand it."
Under Monken, the door is very much open for Deion. Monken appears to have developed quite the affinity for Shedeur in their three months together, as well.
"I got a ton of respect for [Deion] and I got a ton of respect for Shedeur because all he's done since I've been here is work. That's all he's done is compete. He was here early in the off season."
It hasn't hurt that the Pro Bowl QB has also buttered him up a bit.
"Hell, he bought me a horse head," joked Monken about the birthday gify he received from Shedeur earlier this offseason. I mean, tried to cheese up to me early, which is really cool. So I think it's been great."
