Browns Head Coach Provides New Update on Quinshon Judkins Before Week 2 cover image

Despite signing his rookie contract ahead of Week 1, Quinshon Judkins' status for Cleveland Browns in Week 2 remains unknown

Quinshon Judkins won't be on the field when the Cleveland Browns return to practice on ahead of a Week 2 showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski provided the pivotal update for the No. 36 overall pick in April's NFL Draft on Wednesday, but wouldn't specify specifically why he wasn't at the team facility. It may be because hes meeting with league in New York to discuss the battery, domestic violence incident that occurred in South Florida in July. Judkins was ultimately not charged for the incident but could still face discipline from the league via a violation of the personal conduct policy.

"He's not here today, not gonna get into specifics, but expect him back tomorrow," Stefanski of his absence. A report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL network later confirmed that Judkins is in fact meeting with the league.

While there was optimism that Judkins could suit up as soon as Sunday against the Ravens, Stefanski was extremely non-committal on anything regarding the rookie running back's availability this week.

"With any player you wanna be very smart about where they are, cause it's all different. It could be guys coming off an injury, guy that you signed late during the year. You just have to be smart about where they are and that's where this week, we'll take it day-by-day before making that determination."

By missing Wednesday's practice, the Ohio State product would have just two days of on-field work to get up to speed in time to make his NFL debut. That's a quick turn around for any player, but especially a rookie who missed all of training camp due to the ongoing legal situation, which kept him unsigned up until this past weekend.

Judkins finally agreed to terms on a four-year, fully-guaranteed rookie contract worth $11.4 million. After signing, the league granted Cleveland a roster exemption for the next two weeks that allows Judkins to practice with the team, but he can't play in a game until the exemption is lifted and the Browns make a move to add him to the 53-man roster.

Of course, Judkins's debut could also be delayed by a potential suspension from the league if they deem he violated the personal conduct policy. How soon after meeting with league officials the NFL will come down with a decision on any punishment remains to be seen though as well.

In the meantime, Cleveland is taking a very patient approach to getting their new work-horse running back on the field. Whether or not he plays in Week 2 could come down to how up-to-speed he is after working on his own throughout the preseason.

The coming days will tell.
