Only one player has been ruled out for Cleveland Browns showdown with Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while a key member of the secondary is questionable.
After a tough game for the Cleveland Browns secondary in Week 1, the group may enter Week 2 shorthanded.
One day after Tyson Campbell popped up on the team's injury report with an ankle injury and didn't practice Thursday, he returned to the field on Friday, but heads into the weekend with a questionable designation ahead of the Browns matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With or without Campbell, Cleveland's defense is likely to have its hands full with a spiteful Baker Mayfield and a strong arsenal of weapons for the Bucs, headlined by Ohio State product Emeka Egbuka, veteran Chris Godwin and even young speedster Jalen McMillan, who has been working his way back from a knee injury this week.
While Campbell's status is to be determined, veteran guard Teven Jenkins was the only player ruled out by the Browns going into Week 2 as he continues to nurse a back injury suffered at practice during Week 1. Jenkins was ruled out for Cleveland's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to the ailment and then missed all three days of practice ahead of Week 2, as well.
With Jenkins sidelined again, rookie guard Austin Barber will once again start in his place. Head coach Todd Monken had already revealed that Barber had played well enough in Week 1 to start again, even if Jenkins had been healthy so the job appears to be his for now anyway.
On Friday, offensive line coach George Warhop raved about Barber becoming a starter so soon into his career, while making a position change from guard to tackle.
"He's just been pretty consistent. Nothing's too big for him," Warhop said. "So when he was a tackle, he handled that really well. We just kind of said, 'Hey man, we need you at guard. We're going to put you in there.' He went in there and didn't blink, listens, try to do it the way we ask and he just continues to grow in that way."
Several other linemen also appeared on the team's injury report this week including starting center Elgton Jenkins, who was limited on Wednesday and Thursday with a back injury. He will head into the weekend ready to go, though for Sunday.
Top swing tackle Dawand Jones was limited on Wednesday due to a head injury of some sort, but returned to practice on Thursday as a full participant. He's also cleared to play.
Additionally, rookie center Parker Brailsford continued to appear on the report with a thumb injury that seems to have bothered him for several weeks. He was limited multiple days but, similarly, has no designation for Sunday.
