There were minimal touchdowns thrown on Day 14 of training camp as a pivotal week of practice commenced for the Cleveland Browns in Berea.
A big week commenced on Monday as the Cleveland Browns returned to practice in Berea. Later this week, a joint practice with the Buffalo Bills will serve as a critical evaluation tool in sorting out the roster and, of course, the quarterback position. But there's work to do before that.
Keep tabs on each day of training camp with our daily recaps from Berea.
Day 14 Headlines
Quarterbacks
It was a pretty ho-hum day overall for all the quarterbacks in terms of play-making opportunities.
Monday was Shedeur Sanders' day with the first team as the team was in shells and he largely took what the defense was giving him throughout the various sessions of practice. There were very minimal downfield throws on the day.
His best sessions (and Deshaun Watson's for what it's worth) came during a red-zone 11-on-11 drill where the offense finally put up some points. Sanders tossed three touchdowns during the drill, including one to Dylan Sampson on a screen, one to Harold Fannin Jr. on a nice play as he cut across the back of the end zone and then one final one to Blake Whiteheart.
His two-minute offense drill went poorly overall, with his group failing to gain one first down despite completing two short passes.
Watson was able to move the ball a little bit better in his attempt at the two-minute, granted his drive also stalled out after an attempt to draw the defense offside with a mix of cadences failed.
His red zone word was also his best working, where he tossed one true touchdown to Gage Larvadain on a speed out. He also completed one to Luke Floriea in the back of the end zone after a scramble drill, but the play would have likely ended in a sack.
Meanwhile, Dillon Gabriel took reps for one 11-on-11 series and went 0-2 passing.
O-Line Roulette
Elgton Jenkins spent a good chunk of practice talking with a trainer, which left the first group looking slightly different on Monday:
Tytus Howard at RT, Teven Jenkins at RG, Luke Wypler at C, Zion Johnson at LG, Spencer Fano at LT.
It's worth noting that C Kingsley Eguakun also took a few reps at center throughout practice. He started practice with the twos, then rotated with Wypler. The second unit was mostly made up of:
KT Leveston at RT, Austin Barber at RG, Eguakun at C, Zak Zinter at LG and Dawand Jones at LT.
One small change was that Leveston had been working primarily as a guard throughout camp, but bounced back out to tackle today, which also left rookie Austin Barber trying his had at guard for the first time.
Injuries and Absences
Let's get the obvious ones out of the way. TE Joe Royer still remains away from the team. DT Maliek Collins is still on the PUP list but was outside practice per usual.
The list of players not practicing included: Carson Schwesinger, Cedric Tillman, D’Angelo Ross, Michael Burton, Mike Hall, Parker Brailsford, Jack Conley, Jack Stoll, Sam Kamara, Kalia Davis, Maliek Collins. DE Alex Wright was a new addition to the list.
Meanwhile, C/G Elgton Jenkins was active during the individual position drill work and then was seen talking with a trainer during team drills.
On a positive note, Zak Zinter, Myles Bryant, and Elijah Chatman were all back to practice. also back. Also, Michael Coats Jr. and Nate Evans, who were both injured in Saturday's preseason game with the Bears, were also participants.
Play of the Day
There really wasn't much to choose from on Monday, but we'll give the nod to the defense. Julian Okwara had two sacks Saturday and was in the backfield quite a bit during Monday's practice. On this particular play he would have likely had a sack on Watson. Even if it wasn't Watson made a pretty impressive throw to the back of the end zone for a touchdown to a tow-tapping Luke Floriea. So either way, it winds up a good play.
Player of the Day
An ankle injury couldn't keep Michael Coats Jr. down for long. After snaring an interception against the Bears this weekend, Coats Jr. picked up where he left off on Saturday. There were several occasions when he got his hands in to break up a pass and he nearly snared an interception off Watson during one 11-on-11 drill. Coats seems in the driver seat right now to make the roster, considering the lack of depth at the CB position.
Quote of the Day
Jared Verse was asked about his scuffle with Spencer Fano earlier in camp and took an opportunity to praise the rookie for standing up to him. He also expressed that he's made Fano better and Fano has made him better.
"I don't think he goes over the edge at all. I think fighting is necessary when you get to football. You have to have that edge. I talk crazy. I'm very disrespectful when it comes to the way I compete, especially when I try to drive my teammates to another level. So I wouldn't expect him any less than to retaliate because that's the type of player he is. He's a very magnificent player. And to go against him, he's gotten so much better in these past couple of weeks. What's it been, a month? I don't even know. Camp's been running all long. But in the time we've been together, he's gotten so much better. Because he's getting better, he's getting to the point where I'm starting to learn things from him. I'm starting to learn a little bit about my tendencies and what he's picking up on, so it's making me a better player as well."
What's Next?
The Browns are right back at it on Tuesday for Day 15 of training camp. It's expected to be a fully padded practice day for Cleveland.
