The pads came on in Berea, and a competitive but sloppy day of practice unfolded in Berea. Plus, the QB competition takes an interesting turn.

The pads came on for the first time as the Cleveland Browns took the field for Day 5 of training camp on Monday. What transpired was a loud but sloppy day and yet it felt like one of the most equally competitive days of camp. There were some wins for the defense, some wins for the offense.

Keep tabs on each day of training camp with our daily recaps from Berea.

Day 5 Headlines

Quarterbacks

There were some ups and downs for all three quarterbacks on Day 5, with Shedeur Sanders settling in with the twos as the practice went on. He finished with a very strong two-minute offensive session where he completed two of three passes, including a long TD pass to Gage Larvadain to end practice.

Prior to that, though, Cleveland worked a red-zone, fire-drill session where the goal was to run a play and get the kicker out for a field goal. It served as a learning moment for Sanders, who wound up running two plays where the clock would have run out before getting the kicking unit on the field. Todd Monken coached him up a bit afterwards.

Watson, conversely, executed the drill perfectly. It's a simple difference between a young player still learning how to execute the situation and Watson, who is a veteran and done it a ton at the NFL level.

Outside of that, though, there were still a lot of ups and downs for Watson throughout practice. His deep shots continue to come up woefully off target. But he was solid at executing some throws in rhythm over the middle and short throughout practice. His hurry-up series ended on fourth-and-short after KC Concepcion couldn't hang onto a ball over the middle in tight coverage.

Also of note, in the first 11-on-11 period, Dillon Gabriel had a handful of reps with the first-team o-line and some of the first-team skill position players. A first for him during this camp.

Overall, it felt like another day where Sanders started to separate himself from Watson.

Full Pads = Sloppy

The first day of full pads always generates some excitement from players, coaches, and those of us who cover the team. There was certainly plenty of popping to behold, but also plenty of sloppiness.

There was an assortment of pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball. There were at least four dropped passes today, and an assortment of throws that were just totally off the mark.

As installs continue for another three days, Todd Monken continues to suggest things will get cleaner when they get into truly competitive practices later in the week.

O-Line Roulette

With Teven Jenkins out for a third straight day, it was KT Leveston most prominently running with the ones at guard. The first team o-line was:

Tytus Howard at RT, KT Leveston at RG, Elgton Jenkins at C, Zion Johnson at LG and Dawand Jones at LT

As for the second team unit, with Green out it was mostly:

Barber at RT, Jack Conley at RG, Parker Brailsford at C, Jack Conley at LG and Dawand Jones at LT

Nothing Serious

The final session of practice, the Browns were working on a hurry-up offense situation with 90 seconds on the clock. On a fourth-and-short play with the first team, KC Concepcion tried to make a catch over the middle and wound up landing hard on his shoulder as he went to the ground and was slow to get up.

He wound up walking off with a trainer holding his right arm very still and pointing to the shoulder. It looked bad in the moment, but Concepcion was seen moving the arm and chatting with running backs coach Duce Staley, as well as taking photos with his fiancé after practice. Word is he's fine and it's nothing serious.

Injuries and Absences

DT Maliek Collins' remains on the PUP list and Joe Royer was absent yet again for personal reasons. DT Kalia Davis, who left Day 1 with an injury and hasn't practiced since.

The list of absentees grew on Saturday to include: LB Carson Schwesinger, DT Kalia Davis for a fourth straight day, G Teven Jenkins, WR Jamari Thrash, and new additions C Kendrick Greene and DT Mike Hall Jr.

Play of the Day

A sloppy day ended on a high note when Sanders recognized he had man coverage and audibles into mass protect before launching a bomb to Gage Larvadain on a fade down the right sideline. It was the final play of practice and a nice way to end it for Sanders and company.

Player of the Day

Mason Graham continues to eat up anyone trying to block him along the Browns' offensive line. That only continued with full pads on during Monday's practice. On numerous occasions, he was in the backfield ready to blow up a run play and generating pressure on the QB. He appeared to come away with at least 1.5 sacks for the day. His dominance continues.

Quote of the Day

Veteran linebacker Quincy Williams on the small scuffle that broke out between the offense and defense on Saturday:

"If you went through a whole training camp and there were no fights, I'd probably be worried about your team. You feel me? Just that competitive nature of it. And then if you seen after the game, I mean after that scuffle, we all came together, made sure we was all on the same page and today we're going to be able to compete again today."

What's Next?

Right back at it on Tuesday for Day 7 of training camp, which is one of six remaining sessions open to the public. Gates open at 12:30 with practice commencing around 1:30.
