For the past 20-plus years, the Browns have not just been yearning for, but are desperate for a quarterback that can actually sustain success while donning their jersey.
Perhaps you’ve seen the jersey that circulates once every year, that it seems like a running joke at this point with one Browns fan owning a jersey, and then placing a small nameplate on the back to indicate a new quarterback.
Some teams need decades to get to the point where the Browns have gone.
The only real consistency that the Browns have gotten was when Baker Mayfield started in Cleveland. He ended up invigorating some life into the Dawg Pound, and even helped them get to the Divisional Round in the Playoffs.
However, you can count on one hand how many times the Browns have made the playoffs since 1990. A dreaded four playoff appearances for a fanbase that is recognized as one of the more passionate fans in the NFL.
Which is why in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Browns took not just one, but two quarterbacks to at least increase the chances of possibly hitting on someone.
It was a weird draft. Shedeur Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders was projected to go in the top-10 of the Draft, and Cleveland was certainly an option.
But ultimately in the first round, the Browns ended up taking defensive tackle Mason Graham with the fifth overall pick. And as the Draft went on, there were still no QBs taken from the Browns until they selected Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round.
Sanders, eventually was taken by the Browns, shockingly in the fifth round.
But for more specifically Gabriel, he has certainly caught the eye of many former coaches, media members, and fans alike.
Gabriel was given a start in the final preseason game this season, and he shined with his quick decisions, accuracy, and protection of the ball.
Against the Rams, he completed 12 of 19 passes for a touchdown and a passer rating of 100.5, and it seemed like that was all former NFL coach Herm Edwards had to see.
He spoke to ESPN Cleveland Radio and didn’t hold back on last season’s Heisman candidate:
“You are right about Gabriel. When I watched him in the preseason, he got the ball out now. He’s accurate, he got the ball out, he’s a rhythm thrower. I said this guys, when they drafted this guy, you guys know him in Cleveland, he reminds me of Brian Sipe.”
Sipe is a Browns Hall of Famer who had one of the best careers under center for the franchise.
If anything Browns fans would be thrilled if Gabriel had the career trajectory he did. In 1980, Sipe won the MVP Award by completing 60% of his passes, with 30 touchdowns and a league-leading interception percentage of 2.5.
If Gabriel can turn out to be, at the very least, a quarterback like Sipe, Browns fans will likely call this draft a total win.
With recent struggles of current Browns starter Joe Flacco, it could potentially open the door for Gabriel to assume the helm. But would that be good for his development? It’s too early to tell.
Cleveland’s next game is against the Green Bay Packers in an effort to avoid an 0-3 record. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET, and will be broadcasted on FOX.
