Fan favorite Nick Chubb is expected to sign a one-day contract with the Cleveland Browns, then retire with the franchise officially on Friday.
Some players are just meant to wear Brown and Orange forever. Nick Chubb is one of them, and now he'll officially be enshrined in Cleveland Browns history forever.
As Haslam Sports Group Managing Partner JW Johnson revealed on the team's daily show Cleveland Browns Daily, Chubb is expected to sign a one-day contract with the franchise to then retire a Brown.
As part of the festivities, Chubb will host a press conference at the team facility in Berea. Johnson also revealed that Chubb will be honored at the Browns home opener on Sunday, where he's rumored to be the Dawg Pound Captain.
“Nick epitomizes what it means to be a Brown," said Johnson. "I’ve been honored to be able to watch him practice and I remember at times looking at guys like, ‘God, we get to watch greatness every day. I hated it when Nick left and sometimes that’s the business of football unfortunate. I’m glad he got an opportunity to go to Houston and have some winning football. But we are honored and privileged to have Nick come back tomorrow. He’s going to officially retire as a Cleveland Brown."
The 30-year-old formally announced his retirement back on August 21 via an emotional, multi-slide post on Instagram. He closed the post with a heartfelt message "Till the day that I die, it will always be GO DAWGS (in reference to his college Georgia) and GO BROWNS."
Chubb's retirement decision came after spending the 2025 season with the Houston Texans, where he registered just 566 rushing yards and three touchdowns. It was the only season of his memorable career that he spent away from Cleveland.
Drafted by the Browns in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb quickly ascended into a fan favorite after a memorable game where he carried the ball only three times, but racked up 105 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 4 loss to the Oakland Raiders during his rookie season.
Then head coach Hue Jackson couldn't keep Chubb buried on the running back depth chart and he eventually took over as the lead back by Week 7. He never looked back, finishing that first campaign with 996 yards. He followed it up with four straight seasons with over 1,000 yards rushing, including a 1,494 yard season in 2019 – which also included 8 touchdowns – and a career-best 1,525-yard season in 2022, where he scored 12 touchdowns.
At the peak of his powers, Chubb was on a Hall of Fame trajectory, until a controversial hit by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick on Thursday Night Football in Week 2 of the 2023 season derailed his career. Chubb needed multiple surgeries to repair a torn MCL and a severely damaged ACL.
He returned to Cleveland midway through the 2024 campaign, but clearly wasn't the same player. After one year in Houston, Chubb made the tough decision to hang up his cleats for good.
Despite the devastating end to his Browns tenure, Chubb was part of plenty of notable moments, including the team's magical playoff run in 2020 that saw Cleveland upset the Steelers in the Wild Card round 48-37.
He'll retire ranked third all-time in Browns franchise history in rushing yards (6,843), behind only LeRoy Kelly (7,274) and Jim Brown (12,312). He's also third in rushing touchdowns in franchise history with 51, behind the same two legends.
