George Warhop brings a demanding coaching style to the Cleveland Browns. New tackle Tytus Howard knows better than anyone that his philosophy works.
The Cleveland Browns' makeover on the offensive line with a new voice to oversee the group.
One of the first hires new head coach Todd Monken made to his staff after accepting the job back in January was bringing former Baltimore Ravens o-line coach George Warhop with him.
The 64-year-old is considered a no-nonsense guy, and as Executive Vice President of Football Operations and GM Andrew Berry worked to overhaul the group during the first week of free agency, that attitude may be exactly what's needed to turn it around.
New Browns tackle Tytus Howard has first hand proof that Warhop's approach works.
"His attention to detail when it comes to technique, you're gonna get the same guy every day, he's not gonna sugarcoat it," Howard said of Warhop, who he played under for one year in Houston in 2022. "He's gonna coach everybody the same way, and he gonna demand the best out of each and every one of us every single day. That's just how he is, that's just how he's built, and that kinda rubbed off on all the guys on the line and basically rubbed off on everyone on the team."
That "tough love" approach has worked in Cleveland before, most notably when legendary offensive line coach Bill Callahan was with the team from 2020-2023. Of course, Warhop is poised to have an entirely new cast of characters to coach.
The fact that Howard has history with him should help ease that transition. Other new faces may not have ever played for Warhop, but they do seem to know what they're getting into.
Recently signed guard Zion Johnson revealed last week that Warhop's presence was one of the biggest reasons he signed with the Browns in free agency.
"I think he's one of those offensive line coaches that draws guys in, just with his level of coaching. He is one of the elite offensive line coaches and I think that's pretty well known," Johnson said in his first press conference. "To have the opportunity to come in and have him coach me, learn things from him, but also to bounce off of him is going to be great for me, and great for our room as well."
Beyond Howard and Johnson's endorsements, Warhop's reputation clearly precedes him. He's assertive, but he gets results.
Howard revealed that harsh reality about playing for him, though.
"Everyone I've ever seen been around him has the same thing to say about him," said Howard. "No matter where he's been, the players he's coached, you're gonna hear the same thing. He demands the best, and if you can't meet that energy, you won't play for him."
The months ahead will reveal who can and can't play for Warhop here in Cleveland.
