The Cleveland Browns haven't beaten the Las Vegas/Oakland Raiders since 2014. They haven't won on the road against the silver and black since 2012. The man tasked with ending those sad streaks will be polarizing rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who will be fighting against a little history of his own.
Since the Browns returned to town in 1999, rookie QBs are 0-17 in their first career starts. Sanders is really hoping to buck that trend not only because his 2-8 football team is desperate for a win against an opponent they should have a legitimate chance to beat. But, also because if he plays well in a win, there's a chance he can earn himself another start in Week 13, and beyond.
All indications are that Sanders is taking this opportunity very seriously, and that he used a week of preparation centered around him to really familiarize himself with the rest of the first team offense. Now he has to put it together on the field.
Fortunately, he is set to face a Raiders defense that really won't offer much resistance. Maxx Crosby is obviously a force in the trenches, but beyond him, they probably won't offer much resistance on that side of the ball.
Entering Sunday, Las Vegas ranks 30th in third down conversion percentage, giving them up at a clip of 44.62%. It's a much more modest 16th in red zone touchdown percentage, but still allowing them at a 58.97% clip. Those two areas are often where games are won and lost.
Meanwhile, on Monday night football last week, the Raiders struggled to move the football much on offense against a Cowboys defense that has been one of the most porous in football this year. They converted only three third downs, had just 236 net yards, including just 27 on the ground.
Geno Smith has struggled mightily in his age 35 season. It's not all his fault. Like Cleveland's offense, he doesn't have much help around him behind a struggling offensive line (sound familiar) and no receivers that opposing defenses truly fear. His best threat is tight end Brock Bowers. Running Back Ashton Jeanty has the potential to be a star in this league, eventually, but is held back at the moment.
Can Sanders improve from his rough debut and bring some new life to the Browns offense to take down the Raiders? Find out.
I'm buying the hype because why not? This Browns team gone from bad to worse as the season has droned on, and it's been an overall painful experience watching football in Cleveland, Ohio. For once, the script is going to flip.
Listen, the Browns are very bad this year that, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize the Raiders might actually be a worse football team. Sunday features two of the worst franchises in the current era of NFL Football.
Of course, this is the matchup that Shedeur Sanders gets his first start, and if the Browns are going to win, it will likely be because he puts together a memorable performance, much like his days at Colorado, where he took the college ranks by storm. If we get even a semblance of the guy from Colorado, Browns fans will be in for a fun afternoon.
Sanders has proven he can make all of the throws. Maybe just maybe he'll take his first step toward resolving the Browns never ending franchise QB nightmare.

It was inevitable that Shedeur Sanders would start at some point this season, it just wasn't expected under these circumstances – with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffering a concussion that would pave the way for him.
In some ways, it's the perfect timing for Sanders to take over. The Raiders are a bad football team, with a few very talented players. That starts with Maxx Crosby, who can wreck a game plan all on his own and could make life very hard for Sanders in his first career start.
Still, this is a Raiders defense that Cleveland should be able to move the football against, at least enough to win the football game. A lot of this, too, comes down to the fact that one of these teams has an elite unit in its defense. That's the Browns. The other, well, doesn't.
I keep asking how Las Vegas will score in this game, and I can't come up with an answer. Ashton Jeanty is a future star in this league. Brock Bowers is a legitimate threat in the pass game. But you need a lot more than that against this Browns defense.
In his first start, Sanders gets his first win. The biggest question will be whether or not his performance will earn him the starting job beyond this weekend?
