Led by Tristan Wirfs’ elite protection and a revitalized supporting cast, a healthy Tampa Bay front looks to rebound from injury woes to safeguard Baker Mayfield’s resurgence.
Injuries plagued the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive line last season, but health and Tristan Wirfs' elite production could cement the position as a top-5 group in the NFL.
Sharp Football Analysis ranked all 32 offensive lines on June 30. Tampa Bay appeared on its list as the fourth-best offensive line, finishing below the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos.
Wirfs is the engine of the Buccaneers' offensive line; they go as he goes. He allowed two sacks and 23 pressures last season.
The 27-year-old finished the year with a 92.7 Pro Football Focus grade (second-best), 84.9 pass-block grade (fourth-best) and a 91.6 run-block grade (third-best) in 778 snaps. Wirfs' elite production makes him one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL, as he finished ranked as the 22nd-best player by CBS Sports' Pete Prisco.
However, he cannot carry his position group when they are injured, as happened last season. Cody Mauch missed the season with a torn meniscus, Luke Goedeke was on the injured reserve for six straight weeks and even Wirfs missed the first three games of the season.
A depleted offensive line significantly increases the risk of the quarterback getting sacked and injured. Baker Mayfield dealt with lingering injuries that hampered his performance and led to a down season.
While injuries plagued the position last year, a healthy 2026 season could be the catalyst for the Buccaneers' success. Alongside Wirfs are Ben Bredeson, Graham Barton, Mauch and Goedeke.
Bredeson finished with a 76 PFF pass-blocking grade last season, which ranked seventh-best among guards. He allowed one sack and 23 pressures across 622 snaps.
Barton's PFF grades don't rank highly, but his best ability is availability. The 24-year-old center played a whopping 1,135 snaps last year, which was the second-most across his position.
Goedeke graded out in the top 25 of PFF offensive lineman categories. He finished with a 78.9 pass-blocking grade (13th-best), 72.9 run-blocking grade (24th-best) and 75.8 overall grade (23rd-best).
Mauch, who played two games last season, is primed for a bounce-back year protecting Mayfield. Tampa Bay's 48th pick improved in his sophomore season, ranking just outside the top-15 guards with a 74.6 PFF grade. Everything about Mauch improved, sporting a 68.4 run blocking grade, a 77.2 pass blocking grade and 19 pressures.
Health is wealth for the Buccaneers' offensive line. If all remains well for the offensive line, then expect Tampa Bay to have success next season and Mayfield to bounce back from his down year.
