The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to find a way to beat the Green Bay Packers on Sundays. Here are my five keys that can make that possible.
This Sunday, against the Green Bay Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have to dig deep and find something, anything, to walk out of Raymond James Stadium victorious for the first time this season.
The deck is stacked against the Bucs. They must depend on an undrafted rookie quarterback to step up, with Baker Mayfield’s dislocated thumb expected to keep him out for at least three weeks.
Injuries will also keep several other key players out on Sunday. Wide receiver Jalen McMillan, star rookie edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., and cornerback Benjamin Morrison are all out this week.
Tampa is facing a quality opponent in the Packers who are also looking to get their own season on track after starting 1-2 and being embarrassed by the Atlanta Falcons 35-14 last week.
The Bucs also have a head coach in Todd Bowles, whose days in Tampa look numbered. The fans want a change and expect them to voice their displeasure at the first sign of trouble on Sunday.
Despite the tough circumstances, the Bucs need to overcome them and find a way to win.
Here are my five keys that makes a victory possible over the Packers.
Five Keys To Victory
1. Help Jalon Daniels: Anytime an undrafted rookie quarterback is making his first NFL start, he is going to need his teammates to help make his job easier. Everyone on the Bucs’ offense needs to raise their game to take some of the burden off Daniels’ shoulders.
Daniels may not be scared of the moment. That doesn’t mean he can do it alone on Sunday.
2. The Offensive Line Must Step Up: Through three games, Tampa’s offensive line has been a huge disappointment. It was expected to be one of the best, if not the best, lines in the NFL this season.
So far, it has been closer to the worst than the best, giving up a whopping 13 sacks in three weeks. The line was supposed to be the team’s biggest strength this year. It has to be on Sunday.
3. Run The Football: Green Bay has given up the fifth-most rushing yards in the league so far. Tampa running back Bucky Irving was the team’s best offensive player over the first two games before the entire offense had a brutal showing in last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Nothing would be a better help to Daniels than being able to lean on the running game in his first start. The Bucs must also try to get Irving’s backfield mates, Kenny Gainwell and even Sean Tucker, going against the Packers.
4. Rush The Passer: The Bucs need to get pressure on Jordan Love on Sunday. Without Josh Jacobs, who is still in limbo while dealing with legal issues, the Packers have had trouble running the ball. If they can shut down the run early, the Bucs should be able to pin their ears back and focus on getting to Love.
Tampa’s defense has been pretty good this season, but the pass rush still needs more juice. David Walker has two of the team’s six sacks despite only playing 28 total defensive snaps. Bowles says he has “definitely” earned more snaps. Hopefully, more Walker leads to more sacks.
5. Win Turnover Battle: If Tampa wants to beat Green Bay, the team must win the turnover battle. Daniels must take care of the ball over anything else.
The Packers have committed four turnovers through three games. Love has thrown a pair of interceptions and has also been responsible for one of the team’s two lost fumbles. They are a -2 in turnover differential so far.
The Bucs have struggled mightily with giveaways. In three games, they have thrown three picks and lost four fumbles and are a -5 in turnover differential.
If Tampa can finally win the turnover battle, the team has a chance of getting its much-needed first win of the season.
