The Buccaneers blow a 13-point fourth-quarter lead as Jalon Daniels throws two interceptions in an overtime loss to Pittsburgh.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-5) couldn’t overcome two fourth-quarter interceptions from undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels and the defense giving up 16 unanswered points in the final frame to fall in overtime to the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) 26-19 on Sunday.
Despite dominating the Steelers through the first three quarters and the Buccaneers taking a 16-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers led Pittsburgh on four scoring drives in the final quarter and a 70-yard touchdown drive to open overtime to hand the Buccaneers’ their fourth straight home loss this season.
After Rodgers found tight end Darnell Washington for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 13:48 left to cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 16-10, cornerback Daylen Everette picked off a Daniels pass intended for Emeka Egbuka with 13:09 left. Kicker Chris Boswell then cut the lead to 16-13 with a 39-yard field goal after the interception with 8:08 left to play.
The Steelers forced the Buccaneers to punt on their next drive and then tied the game at 16-16 with two minutes remaining on a 58-yard field goal by Boswell.
Two plays later, former Buccaneer Jamel Dean intercepted another Daniels pass intended for Egbuka with 1:46 left and returned it to the Tampa Bay 3-yard line. Although the Buccaneers’ defense kept the Steelers out of the end zone, Boswell gave Pittsburgh the lead, 19-16, with a 20-yard field goal with 1:23 left in the game.
Daniels, who finished the day 22-of-43 for 164 yards and a touchdown, was able to bounce back and led the Buccaneers’ into field goal territory with just eight 13 seconds left in the game. Kicker Chase McLaughlin sent the game to overtime by making a 53-yard field goal with eight seconds left.
Tampa Bay won the toss and elected to kick off to Rodgers and the Pittsburgh offense. Rodgers, who finished the day 33-of-49 for 253 yards and two touchdowns, then chewed up nearly seven minutes on the opening drive of overtime, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Germie Bernard with 3:15 left.
Despite facing a fourth-and-9 on their ensuing drive, Daniels kept the Buccaneers alive with a 10-yard scramble for a first down. However, facing another fourth-and-long with 1:06 left in overtime, Pittsburgh cornerback Jalen Ramsey came flying through the line and sacked Daniels to end the comeback attempt.
The victory was the Steelers’ first road win of the season.
Tampa Bay finished the day with 224 total yards of offense and were 6-of-19 on third down, but the defense ended up allowing Pittsburgh 300 total yards of offense.
Defense Provides Early Spark
Daniels and the Buccaneers’ offense got off to a slow start with two straight three-and-outs on their first two drives, but defensive lineman A’Shawn Robison gave Tampa Bay a spark on the Steelers’ second drive of the game.
On first-and-10 with 10:45 left in the first, the 6-foot-3, 320-pounder was in the right place at the right time as Rodgers’ screen pass was deflected and Robinson corralled the ball while falling to the ground for his second interception of the season. Six plays later McLaughlin opened the scoring by connecting on a 43-yard field goal with 7:51 left in the first to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead.
The Tampa Bay defense came up big again on Pittsburgh’s next drive by forcing a turnover on downs as the Steelers fell short on a fourth-and-3 attempt with 3:46 left in the first. Daniels then capped an eight-play, 60-yard drive by hitting Egbuka for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 14:52 left in the second quarter to give the Buccaneers a 10-0 lead.
McLaughlin later extended the lead to 13-0 with 4:08 left in the first half with a 47-yard field goal. The Steelers finally got on to the scoreboard as Chris Boswell hit a 52-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the Buccaneers’ lead to 13-3.
Although the offense managed just 102 total yards in the first half, the Tampa Bay defense held Pittsburgh to just 116 total yards and 1-of-6 through the first two quarters.
The Buccaneers will be on the road next week when they take on the Carolina Panthers (3-2) at 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 25.
