One of the biggest stars for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the preseason has undoubtedly been undrafted rookie cornerback Ayden Garnes.

When Tampa first signed Garnes, it didn't create much buzz. Though he was talented, Garnes had an uphill battle to stick on the roster. Perhaps with a strong training camp and preseason, the rookie could compete for a spot on the Bucs' practice squad.

Not many people could have predicted that, with only a week to go before roster cutdowns, Garnes would be an absolute lock for the 53-man roster and fighting for legitimate playing time this season.

That is how good Garnes has been.

After turning heads in training camp, Garnes had his coming-out party in Tampa's opening preseason game against the New York Jets. His 47-yard pick-six completely changed the game and helped lead the Bucs to a comeback victory.

Garnes, who also made a life-saving bone marrow donation while in college, continued his strong play in practice and the team's second preseason game. He has made the most of his extra opportunities with fellow CB Benjamin Morrison injured for much of Tampa's offseason. 

Now, the question about Garnes has gone from whether he can make the team to just how much playing time he can earn as a rookie. He has said that his sole focus is to earn a job and that everything beyond that will work itself out later.

While it looks like Garnes will accomplish his goal of making the team, he still has work to do to jump any of the Bucs' starters on the depth chart.

According to Pewter Report, Garnes shared feedback he's heard from his coaches and how he views his own play compared to Tampa's starters. He was very honest, admitting that he still needs time before he is ready to be a starter.

“I’m not in the role to go start right now… the position I’m in is, ‘Can he play quality snaps behind these guys?’”

While it isn't a shock that an undrafted rookie isn't ready to earn a starting role, the fact that it is even a conversation shows how outstanding Garnes has played since joining the Bucs.

Garnes still needs time to develop into a potential starter. With young corners like Zyon McCollum, Jacob Parrish, Morrison, and fellow rookie Keionte Scott already in place, he will get all the time he needs.

However, given the development he has shown in such a short amount of time, it may not be long before Garnes is in the picture for a larger role.

The early success of Garnes and quarterback Jalon Daniels, also an undrafted rookie, has been one of the biggest stories of Tampa's offseason. Both have skyrocketed up the depth chart and have gone from longshots to roster locks over the last couple of weeks.

There have been questions about Tampa's cornerback group all offseason, and Garnes' emergence as a contributor could go a long way toward answering them.
