With Mike Evans gone, having a healthy Chris Godwin Jr. is more important than ever for Tampa. Bucs HC Todd Bowles is confident that Godwin is back to being himself again.

One of the biggest X-factors for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season is the health of wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr.

Godwin has struggled to stay on the field over the past two seasons, missing a total of 17 games with various injuries. He has been able to make it through Tampa's offseason without suffering any injuries or setbacks that threaten his availability for the beginning of the regular season.

With franchise legend Mike Evans no longer in Tampa, the Bucs will need to find a way to replace the best WR in team history. Godwin has become the veteran leader of a talented, young WR room. In addition to his leadership qualities, the Bucs will also be leaning heavily on Godwin's on-field production this year.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield has publicly expressed his confidence in each of Tampa's receivers, but Godwin's availability will be the key to the Bucs' offense reaching its potential.

Even though Evans has been the undisputed top receiver for the Bucs for a long time, Godwin has also produced at an elite level as a second option. Over his nine seasons, Godwin has totaled 612 catches for 7,626 yards and 41 touchdowns.

If he stays healthy, Godwin has proven he can be a WR1. Last year's first-round pick, Emeka Egbuka, may be the Bucs future WR1, but he is still relatively unproven. If Godwin and Egbuka can come anywhere close to replicating the Evans-Godwin duo, Tampa's offense could be great.

On Wednesday, head coach Todd Bowles spoke to reporters, expressing confidence in Godwin's health and excitement to have him back.

"He looks good. He looked good all summer. He looked good in the spring. He's in tip-top shape, and he's ready to go. So, yeah, he looks very good to me. He looks like he's himself."

Godwin Is One Of Bucs' Most Important Players

In Godwin, Tampa has a trusted veteran who has made a Pro Bowl. His presence on the field, combined with his elite route running, will take a lot of pressure off youngsters Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, and Ted Hurst.

Mayfield and Godwin have built terrific chemistry over the years, and Godwin's absence was a big part of the offense's struggles last year, including Mayfield's.

A healthy Godwin will be needed more than ever in the wake of Evans' departure. If he can stay on the field all season, Mayfield may be able to approach his career-high numbers from 2024.

Final Thoughts

Hearing Bowles being so confident that Godwin is fully healthy and looking like the player we are used to seeing is great news, with the season only a little more than a week away.

Evans may be gone, but the Bucs still have a very exciting group of wide receivers. With Godwin leading the way, they all should be able to make up for Evans' production. However, if Godwin gets hurt and misses significant time, Mayfield will have to depend on young, inexperienced players to fill the shoes of a legend.

Godwin's health will be a major factor in the Bucs' ability to contend this season.
