On Monday, head coach Todd Bowles revealed that Sunday's injury suffered by one of the defense's most important players isn't expected to keep him out long, if at all.

Not only did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffer a frustrating defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals in their season opener on Sunday, but they also received an injury scare when one of the defense's most important players went down and had to be taken out of the game.

Second-year cornerback Jacob Parrish exited in the second quarter against the Bengals and didn't return. Parrish is coming off a very successful rookie year and has become one of the most critical players in Tampa's defense.

Before the injury, Parrish was having a strong game, doing his part to limit Cincinnati's star wide receiver duo of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

He was replaced by Benjamin Morrison, who was the Bucs' 2025 second-round pick, drafted one round before Parrish.

Morrison himself has had trouble staying on the field thus far in his career. An injury during his last collegiate season at Notre Dame caused Morrison to fall into the second round, and Tampa believed it was getting a steal as long as he could stay healthy.

That hasn't been the case, but Morrison showed why he was so highly thought of after he replaced Parrish. If he can remain available, he may be the Bucs most-talented corner. Unfortunately for Morrison, his lack of availability already has created a significant amount of pressure to succeed this season.

Bucs Get Good News On Parrish

On Monday, Tampa head coach Todd Bowles spoke to reporters and gave an encouraging update on Parrish,

According to Bowles, Parrish is considered day-to-day with a back strain, and the team is optimistic he will be ready to go for Week 2.

“He just has a back sprain. Both (the) X-ray and MRI came back negative, so it’s just a matter of him getting over soreness.”

That should allow the organization to breathe a big sigh of relief. Tampa's CBs are young and relatively inexperienced, and the team only carried five on its initial 53-man roster. Losing Parrish for any amount of time would have been a huge test of the team's depth, and counting on Morrison to stay healthy, until he proves otherwise, is a risky proposition.

Final Thoughts

The Bucs are going to need a healthy Parrish this season. He had a terrific rookie season a year ago, and Tampa is counting on him to take a leap forward, especially after losing Jamel Dean in free agency.

It looks like the Bucs dodged a bullet with Parrish's injury. He should be back on the field sooner rather than later. After starting the year with a loss, Tampa will need all hands on deck against Cleveland in Week 2 to avoid what would be a devastating upset loss and starting the brand-new season 0-2.

If Parrish is even better than he was as a rookie and Morrison puts his injury woes behind him, Tampa's cornerbacks could be a surprising strength this season.
