Tampa's offensive line was dominant against the Carolina Panthers in Week 7, even with backup Ben Chukwuma forced into action with starting RT Luke Goedeke injured.
The offensive line of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally looked like the dominant unit most people expected it to be in the Bucs' 43-13 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
In Tampa's first six games, the offensive line didn't come close to meeting the high expectations that it had earned. Anchored by superstar left tackle Tristan Wirfs, the Bucs' line was thought to be one of the best in the NFL, if not the best.
There were plenty of reasons to believe the line would be elite.
Wirfs is arguably the best tackle in the league and one of the NFL's best players at any position. In his first six seasons, Wirfs has made the Pro Bowl five times and earned First-Team All-Pro honors three times. He is the only player in NFL history to be named First-Team All-Pro at both left and right tackle.
The rest of the line is also strong.
Right tackle Luke Goedeke was ranked by PFF as a top-25 tackle on either side before the season. Left guard Ben Brederson, right guard Cody Mauch, and center Graham Barton were regarded as above-average players at their positions as well.
Last year, every starter except Barton missed at least five games due to injury, with Mauch missing the rest of the year after a Week 2 knee injury. With everyone healthy to start the 2026 campaign, the line was expected to return to the dominant unit it was in 2024, when Tampa had one of the league's most explosive offenses.
The line started the season blessed with elite talent, health, and enviable continuity from years of playing together.
However, the line struggled badly over the first six games, a major component of the team starting 1-5.
Things changed on Sunday. The line didn't give up a sack after allowing 22 in the first six games. It also bullied the Panthers' defense in the run game all afternoon. Tampa ran for 258 yards, the third-most in team history, and three touchdowns.
Somehow, the line was able to have its best game of the year without Goedeke, who was out with a calf injury.
Taking his place was the unheralded Ben Chukwuma, whose game against Carolina has earned significant praise from everyone in the organization.
Head coach Todd Bowles raved about Chukwuma's performance to the media.
"Huge Future" As A Starter
Not only did Bowles heap a lot of praise on Chukwuma's outing against the Panthers, but he also confidently expressed his belief that the 25-year-old will one day be a full-time starter.
"I thought 'Chuk' (Chukwuma) did a great job. I mean, you know, 258 yards rushing – all those guys up front did an outstanding job. 'Chuk,' with his first start this year coming in, did an outstanding job. He's got great size. He's an athlete, and he's very strong, so the run game kind of benefits him."
When asked if he thinks Chukwuma could be a starter one day, Bowles didn't hesitate.
"He has a huge future in this league as a full-time starter."
Final Thoughts
Chukwuma's PFF grade for Week 7 was only 53.9, a confusingly low number for someone who played such a good game.
Nonetheless, he earned significant praise from his coaches and teammates after playing every snap and helping the team earn a season-saving victory.
Hopefully, Goedeke's injury won't keep him out much longer, especially with another critical divisional game against the Atlanta Falcons up next.
However, if Goedeke is forced to miss that game as well, the Bucs know Chukwuma can step in and get the job done.
