The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are losing a coach with roughly three decades of experience to another team in the state of Florida.
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Buccaneers assistant offensive line coach Brian Picucci to be their run game coordinator, plucking him from the Buccaneers after he spent two seasons in Tampa Bay.
It’s a reunion between Picucci and Jaguars head coach Liam Coen. The two worked together in Tampa Bay in 2024 and also in 2023 at the University of Kentucky, where Coen also served as offensive coordinator and Picucci helped coach the offensive line.
Picucci even coached Coen, back when Coen played for UMass from 2005-2008.
Picucci was more of an assistant, though his official title was offensive line coach. Run game coordinator Kevin Carberry still served as the primary offensive line coach.
Tampa Bay was able to keep Picucci away from Coen and the Jaguars once, but not twice. Coen looked to add Picucci to his staff last year, after he was initially hired as Jaguars coach, but the Buccaneers denied Jacksonville’s request to interview him.
This time, Picucci gets a promotion as he becomes the run game coordinator for the Jaguars.
This is a tough loss for Todd Bowles and Co. Picucci was an integral part of the 2024 offense that ranked in the top five in multiple categories.
Tampa Bay finished third in the league in total yards (399.5 yards per game), fourth in points scored (502), third in passing (250.4 ypg), and fourth in rushing (149.2).
Thanks to Picucci’s work with the offensive line, quarterback Baker Mayfield enjoyed a career year in 2024. He threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, both career-highs.
In 2025, Picucci helped the Buccaneers offensive line produce a top-ten rushing attack in terms of expected points added per rush and averaged 4.1 yards per carry. Bucky Irving (588 yards) and Rachaad White (572) combined for over 1,000 rushing yards on the season.
With the Buccaneers bringing in Zac Robinson as offensive coordinator and senior offensive assistant Tom Moore retiring, Picucci was ripe for the picking for Coen and he took full advantage of it.
Picucci’s ability to help invigorate the run game was a key benefit for the Buccaneers and now he’ll take that knowledge to Jacksonville and help players such as Travis Etienne, Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen.
In Tampa, Irving will still have a chance to be a productive back. Zac Robinson helped Atlanta Falcons' Bijan Robinson become a First-Team All-Pro running back in 2025 and Carberry is still around to help oversee the offensive line. But the experience of Picucci is always tough to replace and replicate.
This is a coaching change that seems small on the surface, but could have a noticeable effect down the line.
