A significant Raymond James Stadium overhaul looms. Buccaneers and Tampa Sports Authority discuss a potentially multi-million dollar deal impacting the iconic venue's future.
The stadium the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their fans call home might look awfully different awfully soon.
The Tampa Bay Business Journal reported Wednesday that the Bucs asked for a meeting with the Tampa Sports Authority to discuss a deal to upgrade Raymond James Stadium.
Raymond James has been one of the two buildings to host the Buccaneers in the franchise's history. The Bucs played in Tampa Stadium from their first season in 1976 through 1997. In 1998, the team moved into Raymond James, where they've played for more than three decades.
The most recent renovation of the stadium took place between 2016 and 2018, and the cost of those renovations totaled more than $160 million.
If this upgrade comes to pass, it will likely cost significantly more than that.
For context, another NFL team in Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is going to spend roughly $1.4 billion on their upgrade of EverBank Stadium, which is slated to be completed by the start of the 2028 season. The Jaguars will split the cost of that renovation with the City of Jacksonville, with taxpayers handing over $775 million.
Analysts have projected that a renovation of Raymond James could cost between $500 million and $600 million.
To be clear, the result of this meeting doesn't necessarily have to be a stadium upgrade. It could also result in an extension of the stadium's lease-- which expires Jan. 31, 2028. The SportsBusiness Journal reported the Bucs must inform the Tampa Sports Authority of their plan to exercise a five-year extension option by Jan. 31, 2027.
Of course, it could also result in a massive upgrade and a lease renewal.
Before these parties meet publicly, it's anticipated the Tampa Sports Authority will plan a meeting and release agendas and other supporting materials, and these notices will be published on the Authority's website.
This whole process will likely take multiple years, but the vision of a modernized Raymond James is already enticing, and people will speculate about what the stadium will look like. Could Raymond James turn into a dome, like the Las Vegas Raiders have with Allegiant Stadium, or could it be a glass canopy, which the Jaguars are turning their stadium into?
Overall, Raymond James Stadium has hosted three Super Bowls -- XXV in 2001, XLIII in 2009 and, most recently, LV in 2021, which was won by the Bucs.
For Tampa to host another Super Bowl, the best course of action may be to renovate.
