Even after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Liam Coen still shares a strong connection with quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The Jacksonville Jaguars head coach recently made an appearance on The Peter Schrager Hour and was asked by Schrager to share a favorite story about Mayfield.
Coen worked with Mayfield twice in his career, once in 2022 with the Los Angeles Rams, when Mayfield was claimed off waivers late in the season and in 2024 as the Bucs' offensive coordinator.
“Baker’s just a dog,” Coen told Schrager. “That word gets thrown around very loosely in our profession and he’s a real one. Like, when they talk about a ‘G’, he’s a ‘G’."
When the two worked together in Tampa, Mayfield enjoyed a career year. He threw for career highs in both touchdowns (41) and passing yards (4,500). Compare that to his numbers this season under offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, when he finished with 3,693 yards passing and 26 TDs.
Coen praised Mayfield's character and how much of a competitor he is.
“The man, the husband, the father he’s become is who I’m really proud to see. I don’t think people understand how hard he works during the week.”
Coen discussed Mayfield's study habits and preparation style, talking about how Mayfield would take different colored highlighters to make notes about formations, motions, run plays, and pass concepts.
Mayfield had six games during the 2024 season in which he threw for at least 300 yards, and 12 games with multiple TDs, including four games with at least four TD passes. Mayfield also threw five TD passes in a 48-14 Week 17 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Coen’s success in 2024 with Mayfield helped springboard him to his first head-coaching position with the Jaguars, a team he led to 13 wins and a division title in his first season.
Mayfield and the Buccaneers this year lost seven of their last nine games after a 6-2 start and finish 8-9, missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019 and first time under head coach Todd Bowles.
The Bucs are now amidst coaching changes, after ousting both Grizzard and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.
