After leading Tampa Bay to its first victory, Jalon Daniels credited Baker Mayfield’s leadership for helping him earn the win.
Jalon Daniels will never forget the first win of his career.
In his second NFL start, Daniels led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a huge 24-16 upset on the road over the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first undrafted rookie quarterback to ever guide a team to its first win of the season.
More importantly, the victory may have Tampa’s season. At 0-4, the Bucs were as desperate as a team could be, and Daniels stepped up in a big way.
Daniels got a lot of help from his teammates. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka had his best game of the season. Running back Bucky Irving, meanwhile, had the best outing of his career, running for a career-high 165 yards and a touchdown. He also added a score through the air, the first game in his career with both a rushing and receiving touchdown.
After his monster game, it is clear Irving must be the centerpiece of Tampa’s offense going forward.
Despite the standout showings from Egbuka and Irving, and an opportunistic defense that held the explosive Dallas offense to 16 points and intercepted Dak Prescott twice, the night belonged to Daniels.
Since the start of training camp, there may not be anyone in the NFL who has made a name for himself more than Daniels.
He started as Tampa’s fourth-string QB, and nobody expected him to be more than a practice squad hopeful. However, it didn’t take long for Daniels to pass both Connor Bazelak and Jake Browning to earn the job as Baker Mayfield’s backup.
After getting his first career win, Daniels credited Mayfield’s leadership for helping him earn the victory.
Speaking to the media, Daniels praised Mayfield for being there with him every step of the way and said the veteran is doing everything he can to prepare the rookie for game day. Daniels especially credited Mayfield for being available anytime he needs him.
"I don’t know what else I can ask from Baker. I think that he’s been heavily in tune with everything trying to continue to help me prepare for every single situation. Whether it’s as we go through the week of practice or if we’re talking about just on the sideline. Being able to have Baker in my corner, being able to know that I can talk to him about literally anything. Being able to ask him any question has been great for me."
It's clear that Mayfield has stayed heavily involved with the team as he recovers from his dislocated thumb. Mayfield has always been lauded for his leadership abilities, and Daniels has really been able to lean on him for anything he needs since taking over as starter.
Final Thoughts
Mayfield deserves a lot of credit for helping Daniels find his way as a starting quarterback. Even in his first start, a 17-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Daniels didn't look out of place, even though he did make a few mistakes.
Daniels was very impressive in his second start, and already plays with the poise of a seasoned veteran.
The Bucs are expected to call on Daniels once again in Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
