ESPN expected Chris Godwin to put up big numbers this season. However, a slow start has caused the media giant to abandon its pre-season prediction for the veteran.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' season has been full of disappointment so far.

The Bucs were overwhelming favorites to return to the top of the NFC South division and get back to the playoffs after last season's disastrous collapse. So far, this season has been a continuation of Tampa's 2-7 finish down the stretch last year. The Bucs are 1-4 and are hoping to go on a run in the next few weeks to get back into the race for the division.

Tampa has the talent to salvage the season, but needs several players to step up after not meeting expectations through the first five games.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield has played nowhere near the level he showed over his first three seasons with the Bucs. Mayfield will miss his third straight game with a dislocated thumb in Week 6 when Tampa takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The offensive line, expected to be the team's biggest strength, has been anything but and must become the dominant unit it has proven to be in the past.

However, one of the biggest reasons for the Bucs’ underwhelming start to the season has been the inability of their wide receivers to step up in the absence of Mike Evans, who left in free agency this offseason.

Even without Evans, Tampa’s WR room was thought to be in good hands, with productive veteran Chris Godwin Jr. and 2025 first-round pick Emeka Egbuka leading the way.

Egbuka got off to a slow start before having a big game in Tampa’s upset victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Godwin, however, has yet to make an impact, and his early-season slump has likely doomed a bullish pre-season prediction by ESPN for the 10th-year veteran.

ESPN released an article checking in on its one bold prediction for each team made before the season. For the Bucs, the prediction was that Godwin would surpass 1,000 receiving yards this year.

That prediction has already been abandoned.

Godwin's Slow Start

Throughout his career, Godwin has proven to be a terrific WR who would be the top option for many teams' passing games. In Tampa, he has been Robin to Evans' Batman. Without Evans, ESPN believed Godwin would seamlessly step into the WR1 role and would get off to a fast start, with Egbuka nursing an injury during the preseason.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, Godwin has gotten off to a slow start.

"Original prediction: Wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. will record at least 1,000 receiving yards.

"Why we're throwing it out: Godwin has a mere 179 receiving yards over his first five games. I figured that Emeka Egbuka might be limited by the toe injury that was affecting him in the preseason, thus giving a ton of early volume to Godwin. Even though Egbuka has also disappointed, it doesn't seem like the injury is slowing him down or funneling passes to Godwin."

Godwin needs 821 receiving yards over Tampa's final 12 games to get to 1,000.

Is that impossible?

It shouldn't be. Godwin would need to average 68.4 yards per game to get to 1,000. So far, he has averaged only 35.8 yards per game, so he would need to nearly double his production for the rest of the season to hit 1,000.

It's possible. If it were my prediction, I wouldn't give up on it just yet. If the Bucs can start playing to their talent level, everyone on offense should see their numbers significantly improve as the season progresses.

Will it be difficult for Godwin to get to 1,000 yards? Absolutely. However, his track record suggests he is more than capable as long as he can stay healthy.
