The dominant defensive tackle and the Bucs end their standoff with a $30 million extension to anchor Tampa Bay’s defensive front through the 2027 season.

See how easy that was?

After weeks of a contentious contract dispute between star defensive tackle Vita Vea and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the two sides reached an agreement on a huge extension Wednesday that will keep Vea in Tampa through the 2027 season.

As reported by Adam Schefter, the Bucs and Vea came to terms on a one-year, $30 million extension after weeks of a high-profile standoff, which included Vea requesting a trade at the beginning of training camp.

The Bucs refused to trade Vea, and the situation seemed to get messier by the day.

However, the tone appeared to have softened over the past several days. Vea traveled with the team for their preseason opener against the New York Jets. In a postgame interview, new Bucs linebacker Alex Anzalone expressed confidence that the team and Vea would be able to work out their differences after the big fella walked over to share a quick laugh with his new teammate.

It didn't take long for Anzalone to be proven right.

The situation appeared to take a turn for the better earlier Wednesday, with Schefter saying the tone between Vea and the Bucs had shifted and that the DT was eager to get a deal done with the only team he has known during his eight-year NFL career. Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee Show to give his update on the matter.

"It feels like there's been a shift with Vita Vea and the Bucs," Schefter said on the Pat McAfee show. "It feels like we've gone from Vita Vea wanting a trade to Vita Vea now wanting to get a deal done.. I think eventually the two sides figure it out."

Hours later, the deal was finalized.

The new deal adds another year to Vea's existing contract. Vea was set to make $18 million this season, which placed him 19th among NFL defensive tackles. As a near-unanimous pick as a top-10 DT, Vea wanted to be paid more in line with his standing at his position.

Tampa was hesitant to commit big money to a player already 31 years old. Seeing other star DTs like Jeffery Simmons, Dexter Lawrence, and Jalen Carter reset the market with huge extensions this offseason, Vea dug in on his position, saying he would not play for the Bucs without a new contract.

Now, the matter is settled and Vea will continue to be a Buc through at least next season.

Final Thoughts

A short-term extension or adding a few million to Vea's 2026 salary was always the most likely outcome. Once both sides sat down, it did not take long to hammer out an agreement that both sides could be happy with.

Vea gets his money and financial security while the Bucs retain one of their best and most important players for the upcoming season.

Congrats to both sides on getting the deal done, even if it took longer than it needed to.

With Vea's extension done, now maybe it will motivate the team to get quarterback Baker Mayfield's own extension done.

One huge contract standoff down. One to go.
