Once tabbed Tom Brady's successor, Kyle Trask's Bucs tenure ended abruptly. Discover his Falcons move and what the future holds beyond Tampa Bay.
There was a time when former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Kyle Trask was thought to be a possible successor to Tom Brady.
The Bucs took Trask out of the University of Florida in the second round (64th overall) of the 2021 draft.
Trask spent his first season playing behind Brady. Then Brady came back for 2022 after a brief retirement.
After that season, Brady retired for good.
But Trask wasn't promoted. Instead, the Buccaneers signed Baker Mayfield, who has been QB1 ever since.
Trask stuck around Tampa for two more seasons, and initially, the Bucs planned to bring him back for 2025, re-signing him to a one-year deal last March.
But plans changed.
Bucs Roundtable will take a look at where each of the Buccaneers' 2025 free agents stands going into this year's cycle.
Our series has featured offensive lineman Charlie Heck, linebackers Haason Reddick and Anthony Walker Jr., along with cornerback Kindle Vildor and punter Riley Dixon.
The series will also include players brought aboard before 2025, who the team re-signed, such as nose tackle Greg Gaines.
Change of Plans
Trask was with the Bucs for most of training camp, before his release on Aug. 26, as the team made final roster cuts.
In November, the Atlanta Falcons signed Trask to their practice squad after their starter, Michael Penix Jr., suffered a season-ending ACL injury. (Veteran backup Kirk Cousins replaced Penix for the remainder of 2025.) So ended a near decade-long run of Trask playing football in the state of Florida.
Trask, who grew up in Manvel, Texas, attended the University of Florida from 2016 through 2020. Trask’s last season of college football was his best. He ended the year with 4,283 yards and 43 touchdown passes compared to eight interceptions, completing almost 69 percent of his passes.
Trask was named second-team All-SEC for his efforts, and his 43 touchdowns passes led the country.
In the NFL, Trask has appeared in just seven games, completing four of 11 passes.
Trask’s Future
Trask is a free agent again. A reunion with the Bucs was talked about with Trask, but the signing of Jake Browning in free agency on March 11 to back up Mayfield makes that less realistic.
It’s hard to say where Trask will land in 2026. On March 13, the Falcons signed Tua Tagovailoa, and the starting job in Atlanta is expected to be a battle between him and Penix.
