Bucky Irving’s explosive ground game shines despite a collapsing pocket and costly red-zone errors that left Tampa Bay winless after a gritty, weather-delayed clash with Cleveland.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns featured weather delays and field conditions that weren't ideal. Tampa Bay put up a fight, but were still defeated 23-19, going 0-2. Here's what we learned about their offense in Week two.
The run game is there
The Buccaneers run the ball well, with players like Bucky Irving. Irving rushed for 89 yards on 17 carries vs. Cleveland, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Irving is a back who can run between the tackles and also get to the outside. He can make defenders miss and get yards after initial contact, which is a plus in the league. He didn't score a touchdown, but he did set them up to score points a bit. He's done a good job this season, returning from injury.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield ran the ball also, rushing for 29 yards on four carries. As a team they got 137 rushing yards total. Them leaning on the run game does help the pass, especially with the play action. Right now that's a strong suit of theirs. To get that many yards on a good Browns defense is impressive.
The o-line is struggling
The Buccaneers' offensive line struggled against the Browns, especially in pass protection. Mayfield was sacked three times and was under constant pressure. This then prompted him to move around through the pocket which caused a few of those sacks.
Mayfield also had to take off and run a few times with the pocket collapsing consistently during the game. They have a great tackle in Tristan Wirfs, who's been an All-Pro, but they didn't do that well on Sunday. Penalties were also a deterrent. The offensive line unit had three penalties, which stalled drives, forcing them to punt. Those drives could have led to points, but offensive miscues prevented that.
There were multiple holding penalties, which made it even more evident that the offensive line was losing the battle to Cleveland's defensive line at times. The run game was fine but pass protection is where the loss was attributed to more from an offensive standpoint.
Missed opportunities and Mayfield's woes
Tampa Bay's offense had plenty of opportunities to score points but penalties and failure to score in the red zone prevented that. They went to the red zone four times but only got one touchdown.
Mayfield had a decent game, going 21/34 for 182 yards and a touchdown. But he did throw an interception on an out route, where the defensive back got under the ball in what appeared to be a cover-two-style drop and intercept before it got to the receiver.
Mayfield did have a great 49-yard throw to Tez Johnson, but later on fourth down, the pass attempt to Emeka Egbuka was incomplete, which ended the game. Mayfield is a good quarterback, but the season hasn't started great for him.
They'll go against the Minnesota Vikings next on September 27th.
