Armed with high-profile draft picks and veteran signings, David Walker reveals how a unified "four equals one" philosophy aims to transform Tampa Bay’s pass rush into a powerhouse.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense got some upgrades this offseason for their pass rush, and they're poised for a breakout 2026 season.
Buccaneers Defensive Upgrades
Tampa Bay's defense wasn't that great in terms of the pass rush in 2025, as they only totaled 37 sacks, ranking 19th in the NFL and third in the NFC South division. They also had the third-highest blitz rate in the league at 35.0%, but that still didn't equate to a high sack total.
The Buccaneers did get some reinforcements on defense, though, with the signing of linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was last on the Detroit Lions; former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle A'shawn Robinson; and outside linebacker Al-Quadin Muhamad, who spent the 2025 season on the Lions. They also drafted Rueben Bain Jr. out of Miami with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Buccaneers Front 7's Mentality in 2026
Buccaneers linebacker David Walker spoke to the media about the defense and the front 7's mentality going into the 2026 season.
"Just get off- that's how we talk in the whole D-Line Room, that the number one thing is, 'Four Equals One,'" said Walker. "If we're all rushing together, nobody can be wrong. So that's something I picked up: just rush. Do your job first, and the other things are second."
Walker also talked about competing and where his focus is in the field.
"For me, it's just staying in my lane, controlling the controllable. I'm going to go out there, and when I get in, I'm going to try to do the best I can do and not try to look to the left or the right to compete with the next guy. Just doing what I can do. If the coaches see that and they see the production, they're going to play who they're going to play."
Walker was drafted by the Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 121st overall, out of Central Arkansas. Walker did tear his ACL in training camp last year, but he's back on the field, ready to go. Walker noted of the defense, "We're excited to rush," he said. "(Todd) Bowles, he's going to put trust in us. He's going to let us do our thing, and I'm excited for y'all to see it."
Having a good defense can be great for a team. Especially one that can get after the opposing team's quarterback. Some could even say that defenses getting sacks and pressure on the QB could equate to more wins. For example, the Denver Broncos led the NFL in sacks with 68 and were a win away from the Super Bowl.
Granted, they did have a good offense as well. The Buccaneers have an opportunity to improve their defense against the rush in 2026.
