After an explosive rookie debut followed by a late-season slump, the former first-round pick prepares to lead Tampa Bay’s receiving corps as Baker Mayfield’s primary downfield weapon.

The hype for Emeka Egbuka's second season just keeps growing.

Egbuka, after a very promising rookie year in 2025, has been named the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' "under-the-radar breakout star" selection by Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports.

Pereles mentions Egbuka's blistering start to his rookie campaign a year ago, before hitting the proverbial "rookie wall." That, as well as struggles with drops, caused Egbuka's level of play to significantly drop over the back half of the season.

Bucs' general manager Jason Licht spoke about Egbuka's up-and-down year and identified a variety of issues that "took a toll" on the rookie. Licht believes those issues are behind Egbuka, and the organization expects a great season from him. Pereles also believes the young wide receiver will get back on track in 2026, even if he thinks the loss of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin's "age and recent bill of health" may cause problems for the offense.

Expectations For 2026

Even though he struggled in the second half of the season, Egbuka's rookie season was still wildly successful. He became Tampa's WR1 after injuries to Evans and Godwin. Egbuka finished the campaign with 63 catches, 938 receiving yards, and six touchdowns, while being named a finalist for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Now entering year two, expectations for Egbuka are sky-high. Evans is no longer a Buc, and his departure has created an opportunity for the ultra-talented Egbuka to become Baker Mayfield's most trusted target.

Even without Evans, Tampa still has a very strong wide receiver room. Led by Egbuka and a healthy Godwin, the group also includes Jalen McMillan, also healthy now, as well as rookie Ted Hurst and the talented Tez Johnson.

Egbuka will be counted on to showcase the talent that made him a first-round pick a year ago. He must show he can be consistent and play at a high level throughout the entire season. If he does, Egbuka should be a good bet to make his first Pro Bowl while helping the Bucs get back to the playoffs.

Final Thoughts

It seems a little misleading to refer to Egbuka as an "under-the-radar" player heading into the upcoming season. The former Ohio State standout was one of the most highly thought of prospects in the 2025 draft. Egbuka was then a first-round selection and had maybe the best five-game start to his career of any rookie wide receiver.

Egbuka becoming the Bucs unquestioned top option in 2026 shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He certainly is a candidate to have a breakout season, though, and has been looking like a Pro-Bowler since the first day of OTAs.

Tampa's offense is in good hands with Egbuka.
