The interior anchor’s eight-year tenure in Tampa nears a sudden end as salary disputes and missed practices transform a contract standoff into an official departure demand.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers front office has some significant decisions to make this offseason, as key players are in line for potential contract extensions.

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea is one of these players, as the former No. 12 overall pick is entering the final year of his 4-year, $71 million contract.

But, he may not finish out the deal with Tampa.

On Monday, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Vea has officially requested a trade, potentially ending his eight-year tenure with the Bucs.

While a trade request doesn't always spell a deal actually getting done, this is a bad development for Tampa, who is entering a pivotal season after defensive woes in 2025.

Vea has been the glue on the interior of the defensive line since arriving with the franchise, providing consistent run defense and lane clogging on the inside.

But, after Vea did not appear at practices, including mandatory minicamp, alarm bells began going off.

Head coach Todd Bowles disregarded the move from his star nose tackle, telling media "We don't need to see him right now," but it seems contract extensions have not been going in the right direction.

According to NFL.com Senior Writer Kevin Patra, Vea's average annual salary of $17.75 million per-year ranks nineteenth among interior defenders, with players like Kansas City's Chris Jones and Tennessee Titans DT Jeffery Simmons making upwards of $31 million with their new deals.

Vea's quarrels are fair, as his production is definitely comparable to these players, yet his contract says otherwise.

Last season, Vea recorded 4.5 sacks and 34 tackles, adding a fumble recovery and two passes defensed.

This marked a fourth-straight campaign with 4.5 sacks or more, with the 6-foot-4 nose tackle recording 23.5 over his last four seasons.

Outside of the production, Vea is an extremely consistent player, playing in 13 or more games in all but one season during his impressive career.

Vea was also a huge part of Tampa's success during the 2021 season, which resulted in a Super Bowl victory.

Alongside talents like Ndamukong Suh, Shaq Barrett, and Jason Pierre-Paul, Vea helped form one of the most formidable defensive line groups in recent memory, tormenting Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs during the 31-9 win.

With starting quarterback Baker Mayfield also in a contract standoff, the team is likely to prioritize getting a deal done with their signal caller, which could spell additional trouble in securing Vea.

With young edges like Yaya Diaby and rookie Rueben Bain Jr. lining up on the outside, losing Vea would be a big hit to their production and development.
