Entering a high-stakes contract year, Tampa Bay’s elite pass-rusher eyes a massive extension as new defensive reinforcements and soaring market values set the stage for a payday.
Everything is lining up perfectly for YaYa Diaby to have a career season in 2026.
Diaby, who is entering his fourth year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been surrounded by elite talent this offseason. The moves Tampa has made to bolster its defense have Diaby more excited than ever to take the field. After leading the Bucs with seven sacks a season ago, the Louisville product has established himself as one of the NFL's best up-and-coming defensive players.
This season also happens to be the final year of Diaby's rookie contract, and he is expected to earn a hefty raise in his next deal. Spotrac estimates his market value at just above $18 million per year. If Diaby can maintain his consistency as both a fearsome pass-rush and quality run-defender, he may earn even more. Needless to say, Diaby has a lot f money on the line in 2026.
Contract Talks Not A Distraction
Even though there is a lot of money on the table for Diaby, he insists that any contract talks will not be a distraction for him. Diaby believes that his contract situation will work out on its own, and he is only focusing on improving his play on the field.
However, Diaby just watched the Pittsburgh Steelers reward their own young pass-rusher, Nick Herbig, with a four-year, $100 million extension. Herbig and Diaby are both part of the 2023 NFL Draft class, with 2026 being the last year of each player's rookie contract.
Even though Herbig is three years younger, his extension could be the blueprint for Diaby's next contract. While Herbig has the advantage of youth, Diaby has been the more productive player. In their first three seasons, Diaby has three more sacks than Herbig (19 to 16), and leads 142 to 79 in total tackles. Diaby has nearly twice as many tackles for loss (38) as Herbig (23).
New Teammates Should Provide New Opportunities
While Diaby has proven himself to be a productive pass-rusher, the Bucs have been unable to find him a suitable running mate. Tampa spent a first-round pick on Joe Tryon-Shoyinka in 2021, but he didn't meet the team's expectations, and the Bucs let him walk before the 2025 season.
Haason Reddick was next. Reddik received a one-year, $14 million deal by the Bucs for the 2025 season, but he managed only 2.5 sacks and was not re-signed. 2024 second-round pick Chris Braswell has not panned out, and may find it difficult to make the team in 2026.
However, Tampa brought in several high-profile defensive players this offseason. Al-Quadin Muhammad, after an 11-sack season with the Detroit Lions, was signed in free agency. The Bucs drafted Rueben Bain Jr. in the first round of the 2026 Draft. Bain Jr. was widely considered the best edge rusher in the class, and Tampa may have gotten the steal of round one.
Now the Bucs have an abundance of pass-rushers. They also added several other high-profile defenders, such as A'Shawn Robinson and Alex Anzalone as free agents, and Josiah Trotter and others in the draft.
With so many productive new teammates on defense, Diaby should be provided with plenty of new opportunities to wreak havoc. The amount of double-teams he faces should drop considerably. The newcomers couldn't have joined Tampa at a better time for Diaby.
Final Thoughts
Even with all the additions, expect Diaby to remain one of the best players on Tampa's defense. His ability to produce against both the run and the pass makes Diaby invaluable. All signs are pointing toward a career year for Diaby, and he will earn a ton of money in the process.
