The Los Angeles Chargers will head to take on the New England Patriots in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs on Sunday, Jan. 11 in the final slot at 8 p.m. ET. With quarterback Justin Herbert having necessary time to rest, the Chargers offense is looking to start strong in the postseason, and a balanced rush attack would certainly help their QB out. Los Angeles may get a boost back in that regard. While rookie running back Omarion Hampton is officially listed as questionable, he plans to play this Sunday.
Hampton had limited participation in practice Friday, which is his first time on the field since Week 17. Hampton was the Chargers’ first-round pick who they haven’t been able to see too much of this year. He was placed on injured reserve in Week 5 with a fractured left ankle and returned from Weeks 14-17 before sustaining a secondary injury in his right ankle. The rookie has 124 carries for 545 yards and four rushing touchdowns with one receiving touchdown in nine games.
Here is the full story from Chargers Roundtable writer Brad Magsam on the importance of Hampton to the success of the team and a playoff run.
As Magsam points out, under coach Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles has thrived at controlling the tempo of games and time of possession – but it requires a credible run game. When Hampton is healthy, he brings a physicality that isn’t otherwise on their roster. If they want to pull off an upset against the No. 2 Patriots, Hampton could be a large reason why if he’s able to suit up.
