The Los Angeles Chargers selected Mississippi State WR Brenen Thompson with the 105th pick in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, as the Bolts add a dynamic playmaker to their young wide receiver corps.
New Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel values having a true speed threat in his offense, as seen during his time as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where Tyreek Hill was responsible for that role. Pairing Thompson’s speed with Justin Herbert’s big arm could create an exciting connection in Los Angeles.

He transferred to Oklahoma as a sophomore, where he caught seven passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, before following that up with 19 receptions for 230 yards and two scores the next season for the Sooners.
Thompson transferred to Mississippi State for his final season in 2025, where he earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after posting career highs with 57 receptions for 1,054 yards and six touchdowns. He added 232 yards after the catch, showcasing his ability to create with the ball in his hands, while averaging 17.9 yards per target. He was charged with five drops on the year and also contributed four carries for 14 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Thompson earned a 77.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus in 2025, ranking 87th among 679 qualifying wide receivers, while his 78.1 receiving grade ranked 98th at the position.
At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Thompson measured in at five-foot-nine, 164 pounds, with 29 3/8-inch arms and 9-inch hands. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash at this year’s combine, posting a 4.26-second time along with a 1.54-second 10-yard split.
According to Next Gen Stats, Thompson earned an overall score of 77, ranking 14th among wide receivers. His production score of 71 ranked 17th, while his estimated athleticism score of 81 ranked 12th at the position.
Thompson’s elite long speed and acceleration make him a natural vertical threat and an immediate return specialist candidate for Los Angeles. His ability to reach top gear quickly allows him to stress opposing secondaries and flip field position in a single play. While he may not be the tallest receiver, he is as explosive as they come and brings clear special teams value. He should be an intriguing addition to the Chargers offense and a player to watch closely in training camp.
