The Los Angeles Chargers were very close to picking up a win in Week 5, but they ended up losing a close 23-17 game to the Denver Broncos.

The Los Angeles Chargers hosted the Denver Broncos on Sunday in an AFC West clash where the Broncos were able to pick up a win. In this game, both defenses were solid, and the offenses struggled, but ultimately, Denver did just enough to pull out a victory.

With that said, it is now time to take a look at how this game unfolded and what put the Broncos in a position to get the victory.

1st Quarter

To start the game, Bo Nix and the Broncos offense possessed the ball on the first drive, but they were unable to do anything with it, so they punted it away.

Then, on the Chargers' first possession, Justin Herbert and the offense looked solid for a few plays, but Charlie Kolar caught a pass and then fumbled, with the fumble being forced by Talanoa Hufanga and recovered by Brandon Jones.

Following the fumble, the Broncos were able to take advantage as Nix led the offense down to the red zone, and J.K. Dobbins ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead.

After Denver took the lead, the Chargers and Broncos each punted once to end the first quarter.

2nd Quarter

Then, at the beginning of the second quarter, the Chargers and Broncos each punted once again with Denver still up 7-0.

On the Chargers next possession, Herbert was able to lead the offense on a solid drive, but Los Angeles was held out of the end zone, so the Chargers had kicker Cameron Dicker come onto the field and he was able to hit a 42-yard field goal which cut the Broncos lead to 7-3.

After the response from Los Angeles, the Broncos had a good offensive drive as well, but they were also unable to score a touchdown with the drive ending in a 34-yard field goal from kicker Will Lutz to extend the Denver lead to 10-3.

Following the score by the Broncos, the Chargers were unable to move the ball much, as they had to punt the ball back to Denver. After getting the ball back, the Broncos were hoping to do something with it, but Nix was strip-sacked by edge rusher Akheem Mesidor, and while Denver did recover, they opted to go into halftime with the 10-3 lead.

3rd Quarter

Out of halftime, the Chargers started with the ball and were able to move the ball very consistently as the drive lasted for 9:28 and had Herbert make some solid plays with his arm as well as his legs, and to finish off the possession, Herbert threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hayden Rucci, which tied the game at 10-10.

After the touchdown drive from Los Angeles, the Broncos punted on their next possession and then the Chargers also punted on their next drive as well.

When the Broncos got the ball back after one punt by each team, they were hoping to have a solid drive, but Nix was tackled by Tuli Tuipulotu and Mesidor while Tuipulotu forced and recovered the fumble.

Immediately after the fumble recovery, the Chargers took full advantage as Herbert handed the ball off to Kimani Vidal, who broke several tackles on a very impressive run that resulted in a 42-yard touchdown run and gave Los Angeles their first lead of the day as they went up 17-10.

4th Quarter

Just like the third quarter, the fourth quarter began with a punt from the Broncos and the Chargers, but the difference was the fact that Denver had a massive punt return that set them up deep into Chargers territory on the Los Angeles 27.

With the great field position, the Broncos were unable to capitalize as Lutz missed the 42-yard field goal. After Denver's missed opportunity, the Chargers had a few solid plays and got to a 4th-and-1, but Herbert was stopped, and as a result, the Chargers turned he ball over on downs.

Based on the turnover on downs, the Broncos started on the Los Angeles 41-yard line, and this time Denver took advantage as Nix threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton, which tied the game at 17-17. Following the touchdown by the Broncos, the Chargers were looking to respond, but defensive lineman Zach Allen sacked Herbert, and the ball came out, with Allen recovering it.

Denver had yet another opportunity to get in the end zone after the turnover, but they were unable to get into the end zone as they chose to have Lutz kick a 19-yard field goal, which he hit to take the lead 20-17.

On the very next drive, Herbert and the offense needed a response, but instead, Herbert was intercepted by Brandon Jones on 4th and 6 to give the Broncos good field position again.

The Broncos then kept the ball on the ground to force the Chargers to use their timeouts and chewed a lot of clock, and then Denver trotted out Lutz onto the field, and he was able to hit a 36-yard field goal to extend the lead to 23-17.

Then, on the final drive of the game, the Chargers were able to get to an opportunity for a hail mary, but the Broncos sent heavy pressure and Ja'Quan McMillan sacked Herbert which ended the game and dropped Los Angeles to 0-5 and helped Denver improve to 3-2.

The Big Picture for the Chargers

This was a solid performance from the Chargers when considering the number of injuries, especially on the offensive line, but unfortunately, Los Angeles was unable to get the job done. Now sitting at 0-5, the Chargers have very little room for error if they want to save their season.

So, heading into next week, it will be interesting to see how head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers respond, because if they do not respond soon, this team could need to make major changes sooner rather than later.
