Despite an 0-5 start and mounting injuries, Justin Herbert leads the Chargers into Arrowhead hoping to upstage the undefeated Chiefs in a high-stakes divisional showdown.
The Los Angeles Chargers may be winless through five games, but Sunday’s matchup against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs is not nearly as lopsided as the records might suggest. Los Angeles enters at 0-5 with injuries continuing to pile up, while Kansas City is 4-0 and once again looks like one of the AFC’s premier teams. The Chargers are significant underdogs on the road, but with Justin Herbert at quarterback and a divisional rivalry adding another layer to the matchup, Los Angeles still has enough talent to make this interesting.

Game Outlook
At 0-5, the Chargers have reached the point where the conversation around the season begins to change. Making a run at the playoffs is becoming increasingly unrealistic, especially in a division featuring an undefeated Kansas City team, and injuries have only made the climb more difficult. That does not mean Los Angeles is suddenly incapable of competing, but the organization has to start balancing the present with what is best for the future.
There is an argument that development and long-term health should become greater priorities over the second half of the season. The 2027 NFL Draft is expected to feature significant talent, and if the Chargers ultimately finish near the bottom of the standings, adding another premium young player to a roster that should be healthier next season could pay off in a major way. Los Angeles still has Herbert in place, which means the foundation for a quick turnaround already exists.
That is also why the Chargers remain dangerous every week regardless of the record. Herbert is one of the league’s most talented quarterbacks and gives Los Angeles a chance to beat anyone when the offense is functioning. Kansas City is clearly the better team entering Sunday, but divisional games can be unpredictable, especially when the underdog quarterback is capable of taking over stretches of a game.
The injury situation remains one of the biggest problems. Los Angeles is without several important contributors, including Joe Alt and Derwin James, while other spots across the roster remain banged up. Those absences make an already difficult trip to Arrowhead even tougher, particularly against a Chiefs team that rarely gives opponents much room for error.
Still, this should not be viewed as a game where the Chargers simply have no chance. Kansas City is favored by more than a touchdown for a reason, but Los Angeles has enough individual talent to stay competitive if Herbert protects the football and the defense can create a few negative plays. The biggest challenge will be avoiding an early deficit that forces the Chargers into a one-dimensional offense against a team that knows how to protect leads.
The most likely outcome is another loss, which would drop Los Angeles to 0-6 and essentially remove any remaining hope of salvaging the season from a standings perspective. But even if that happens, there is still value in seeing which younger players emerge and determining which pieces should be part of the roster moving forward.
For the Chargers, Sunday is less about proving they are better than Kansas City and more about showing that the gap between these teams is not as wide as the standings suggest. With Herbert under center, an upset is never completely out of the question.
Betting Odds
- Spread: Chargers +7.5 (-115)
- Moneyline: Chargers +321
- Over/Under: 41.5
Following this contest, the Chargers will enter their Week 7 bye before returning to action in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams on the road. That break should give a battered roster an important opportunity to recover and reassess the direction of the season before the second half begins.
