Across the NFL: Everyone Needs a New Offensive Coordinator cover image

Chargers chase offensive overhaul. With rivals scrambling for top coordinators, finding a scheme to boost health and production becomes a high-stakes race.

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking for a new offensive coordinator, along with a new offensive line coach, after parting ways with Greg Roman and Mike Devlin. That's fine! The offense is in need of some modernization and perhaps a system that can keep the players healthier.

The problem is that offensive coordinators that can deliver exactly that are in high demand right now.

Assuming that the four teams still alive in the NFL Playoffs don't make any moves to their coaching staffs, here's a list of teams that are likely to be shopping for a new offensive coordinator this offseason:

  • Detroit Lions
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • Washington Commanders
  • Miami Dolphins
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Baltimore Ravens
  • New York Giants
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Tennessee Titans
  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Buffalo Bills

Now, some of these OC hires have already been reportedly been made but that doesn't change the fact that about half the league is shopping at the same store as the Chargers and looking for the same thing.

I put together this list by looking through which teams have fired their 2025 offensive coordinator as well as teams that have parted ways with their 2025 head coach (assuming the new guy will want to bring in his own OC).

I have, for a while now, thought it was a little nuts that Mike McDaniel would take a demotion from head coach (and one whose lack of success can probably be directly tied to the diminishing production of his oft-injured QB) to return to the job of offensive coordinator, especially with as many open head coaching jobs as there are.

Even if he were going to, I could argue that there's more chance for quick success (to get his name back on the head coaching radar) with the Eagles or Lions than there is with the Chargers.

I brought up a few candidates that are popular around the league and a few that the Chargers might have an inside track with when I wrote about this last week. Based on Jim Harbaugh's track record, I think it's more likely that he picks a guy that he has history with and someone that isn't looking for a one-year mercenary run with the team as his play caller for the upcoming season. Hopefully, whoever that is knows a good offensive line coach.
